Immigration detention is deliberately cruel and isolating by design. FFI’s National Immigration Detention Hotline is the nation’s largest free and unmonitored immigration detention hotline, dedicated to supporting the immediate needs of people in detention, and being a resource for internal organizing efforts.

Our team of highly-trained, multilingual, compassionate volunteers help people in detention feel less alone, navigate the overly complex and abusive immigration system, and further develop their own leadership and advocacy. We connect people with their loved ones on the outside; support internal organizing efforts like mass labor and hunger strikes; document abuse and file complaints; and provide medical, legal, and other vital resources.

The National Immigration Detention Hotline is available inside *every* ICE detention facility. This includes privately-operated detention facilities, county jails contracted with ICE, and Bureau of Prisons (BOP) and other federal facilities detaining people for ICE.

To access the hotline, dial 9233# from a facility phone.

The FFI Hotline is open between 8am-8pm PT / 11am-11pm ET every Monday - Friday, unless otherwise noted on this web page and on FFI social media channels. AT RISK OF BEING PICKED UP BY ICE?

📈 The blueprint to Trump’s mass detention and deportation agenda has been hiding in plain sight for 30 years. Two laws enacted by President Clinton in 1996 laid the foundation to turbocharge the detention and deportation machine by dramatically expanding who can be deported, making immigration detention mandatory, creating fast-track deportations, and stripping immigration judges of much of their discretion.

While Trump is far from the first president to use the ‘96 laws to expand the abuse of our communities, our current moment highlights the perils of centering our laws, policies, culture, and narratives on racist, criminalizing frameworks. Racialized criminalization is the through line from past to present, and we won’t turn the page without confronting it head-on.

“Clinton-Era Laws Passed 30 Years Ago Enabled Trump’s Anti-Immigrant
Agenda. Here’s How We Turn the Page.”

Clinton’s ‘96 laws provided the legal foundation for mass detention,
rapid deportations, and the evasion of due process.

Have you heard of this immigration law that fundamentally changed the immigration system for the worse?

You cannot understand the mass criminalization of immigrants today without getting to know IIRAIRA, which turns 30 today. So, what has this law done?

The Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant Responsibility Act (IIRAIRA), a Republican-sponsored bill signed into law by President Bill Clinton in 1996, sought to meet the media-fueled xenophobia hysteria of the late ‘90s by fundamentally transforming our immigration system towards a far more punitive framework.

Amongst a host of changes to the way our immigration system is designed, IIRAIRA spawned the federal government’s modern fixation on border surveillance and militarized enforcement, fast-tracked deportations by expanding categories of minor criminal violations that made immigrants eligible for removal, erected new barriers for legal relief, withheld access to certain public assistance programs for undocumented families, and instituted new bars against readmission for visa overstays.

↔️ Swipe to learn how IIRAIRA fanned the flames of a growing mass incarceration crisis, spurred the detention industrial complex’s taxpayer cash grab, and ripped apart countless lives throughout the last three decades. by @migrantfreedom

🚨 Only 2 days left! California Governor Gavin Newsom has until Wednesday, September 30, to sign or veto AB 1537 (the “No Side Jobs for ICE Act”) authored by Assemblymember Isaac Bryan.
Right now, nothing in California law stops local police and sheriffs from moonlighting as deportation agents. If we want our communities to stay safe and trusted, we need to close this loophole.
📞 Take action today: Call or email Governor Newsom’s office to urge a YES vote on AB 1537.
Share these steps and resources with your loved ones before the deadline hits. Let’s get this across the finish line.

🚨 The trump administration is now concealing the whereabouts of thousands of immigrants who are subject to final deportation orders, a move that drastically expands upon ICE’s long-standing practice of disappearing people through its immigration detention system.

Even before this new atrocious policy, Freedom for Immigrants has documented hundreds of cases of enforced disappearances over the years and has worked with families to locate their loved ones. Our work does not stop — we will continue to work to close detention camps and free all of our people from the grips of state violence.

Between now and Sept 30, California Gov. Gavin Newsom will decide whether to sign or veto the “No Side Jobs for ICE Act,” AB 1537 by Assembly Member Isaac Bryan.

This bill would make sure local police and sheriffs in California can’t take a 2nd job or “moonlight” as deportation agents.

Armed with $240 billion at their disposal, the Trump administration desperately wants more ICE agents abducting our neighbors from the streets and harming Californians. ICE is spending millions on ads in an attempt to recruit local police, including advertising campaigns specifically in California markets. And nothing in California law prevents local officers from “moonlighting” as deportation agents.

AB 1537 will also help uncover the truth about this troubling practice. Right now, even the most basic information about what’s really happening is shrouded in secrecy. And AB 1537 is the first bill of its kind in the U.S.!

We have a crucial opportunity to raise our voices in support of what’s right. Trump, ICE, et al want to kill this bill. Let’s make it clear that the people want this bill signed!

Make a call to Gov. Newsom, share the post, there is lots we can do today to fight the deportation agenda.
