On 25 July, the United Nations marks the International Day for Women and Girls of African Descent, established under General Assembly Resolution A/RES/78/323.

Women and girls of African descent are too often absent from policy debates that treat women's rights, migration, and racial justice as separate, unconnected categories, and the result is a persistent gap in the data, research, and policy attention directed at them.

We call on European institutions, governments, and civil society to move beyond commemorative statements and commit to concrete, measurable action. Data on race, sex, and migration status must be collected and disaggregated.

Grassroots organisations led by African-descent and migrant women must be funded and protected.

High Court recently identified a legal gap in Ireland: the possession, production or distribution of extreme or violent pornography is not currently a criminal offence, and it would be banned under the proposed new law. If adopted, Minister for Justice Jim O’Callaghan is expected to use the State’s presidency of the Council of the European Union to argue for a shared definition and approach to extreme and violent pornography across the bloc, possibly through a new EU-wide law.

This approach is insufficient and can even be dangerous: all pornography commodifies, humiliates, objectifies and dehumanises women. It reinforces sex stereotypes and women's subordination, contributing to sex discrimination and violence against women and girls.

Framing only some pornography as harmful implies the rest is safe, leaving the consequences of porn consumption unaddressed.

As we've already discussed in our latest posts, Amnesty International UK published a report listing organisations whose entire purpose is defending women's rights, categorising them as anti-rights.

An organisation that defends the decriminalisation of "s-x work" — pr-stitution, a system built on female subordination — does not get to decide who counts as a threat to human rights.

Feminism is not a label anyone can claim by simply saying so. It is the political movement of women organised to end their own oppression.

How did we arrive at a point where a supposedly reputable organisation, with massive organisational resources and global outreach, so blatantly endorses patriarchy and has come to direct its valuable resources towards undermining hard-won women's rights?

Amnesty International UK published its report "A Growing Threat: The Anti-Rights Movement in the UK" on 8 July 2026 — and took it down a few days later after public backlash.

The report named 117 organisations as part of a coordinated anti-rights ecosystem. Alongside anti-abortion groups and ultra-conservative Christian lobbies, the list included organisations that exist specifically to defend women's rights — through legal action, survivor support, and policy advocacy. Grouping these organisations under an "anti-rights" label is extremely serious.

This is one of the dynamics the MOTERIS project is monitoring and documenting: women's rights organisations across Europe losing funding access through reputational attacks and loss of institutional support.

Amnesty's removal of the report — within days of publication, without an official statement at the time — speaks for itself. Does Amnesty really defend woMEN? If not, who are they defending?

The future EU budget must reflect and prioritise EU values and commitments to women’s rights, equality between women and men, fundamental rights and democracy.

We call on Members of the @europeanparliament and the @eucouncil to:

- Defend allocation and monitoring of budgeting taking into account the distinct needs of women and girls, mainstreaming the principle of equality between women and men across the EU budget cycle, and require regular reporting on spending and results related to gender budgeting commitments
- Oppose the integration of funding for women's rights into broad, non-earmarked and generic funding envelopes that make tracking and access more difficult
- Ensure that DAPHNE funding stream - within or outside of CERV+ - is defined and ringfenced as addressing exclusively violence against women and girls, and not broad categories or other groups affected by gender based violence
- Ensure that specialist single-sex organisations providing services to female victims of discrimination and violence, including those supporting survivors of systems of prostitution, have equal access to EU funding within national and EU funding streams and will not become excluded in EU funding calls and project selection
- Promote multiannual operating grants and simplified access procedures for women's rights organisations, particularly small and grassroots organisations
- Ensure that women’s rights and equality between women and men remain visible priorities within future EU funding programmes

Research conducted across 15 EU states under the MOTERIS project reveals that women's rights are disappearing from the EU's budget priorities.

More than 200 organisations and platforms across Europe today have written to Members of the @europeanparliament and the @eucouncil with a clear demand: Women's rights and equality between women and men are legal obligations under EU law.

Dedicated, visible funding for preventing violence against women and girls must be secured in the next Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF, 2028-2034).

Last week, our Director Anna Zobnina represented ENoMW at @ungeneva at "The Maternal Gap: How Systems Fail Mothers and What Must Change" — a side event of the @humanrightscouncil's 62nd session. This is a clip from her powerful speech at the event.

For the first time in @unitednations history, Special Rapporteur Reem Alsalem has dedicated a full report to violence against mothers. The discussion addressed violence against mothers and the protection gaps faced by migrant and refugee women across Europe.

We were asked to identify the protection gaps. There are many. But one gap underlies them all. It is called patriarchy, which is the rule of fathers.

MOTERIS In-Person Capacity Building Programme took place this week in Budapest.
Module 4: Applied Learning & Peer Exchange.

We delivered a session on facing backlash (SLAPP) through communication and legal action.
Using a case study as a starting point, participants worked collaboratively to develop an effective response strategy.

MOTERIS works to monitor, protect, and strengthen the civic space of women's rights organisations and feminist activists across the European Union, responding to the growing restrictions and backlash against women's rights affecting actors in 14 EU Member States. The project advances this through research, advocacy, and the delivery of targeted training to strengthen the capacities of European feminist organisations.

The shrinking civic space for women and backlash against women’s rights defenders is a pattern affecting feminist actors across 15 EU Member States, often going undocumented and unaddressed at the European level.

Women's rights organisations (WROs) and women human rights defenders are central to how the EU delivers on its founding values of equality, non-discrimination, democracy, and the rule of law. Fundamental rights and democratic values can only be realised when WROs are free to work without fear of intimidation or funding pressure.

Monitoring, strengthening advocacy, organisational resilience, safety and solidarity are how that freedom is protected and what MOTERIS project is about.

Coordinated by the Swedish Women's Lobby in partnership with the European Network of Migrant Women, the Hungarian Women's Lobby, the Coordination Française pour le Lobby Européen des Femmes (CLEF), and the Lithuanian Women's Lobby, the project builds the first Europe-wide tool to systematically monitor civic space for women's rights organisations.

Our civic space belongs to us.

📣 RIZA — Call for External Proposal Evaluator
We are looking for an external independent evaluator for Stage 1 of the RIZA two-stage call.

🌱 RIZA (Grant Agreement No. 101187804) provides Financial Support to Third Parties (FSTP) to grassroots CSOs working with and/or led by migrant and refugee women across the EU. Funding is organised in three cycles and uses a two‑stage application process. Cycle 2 places a regional focus on the southern Mediterranean.

✍️ The evaluator will:
- Check eligibility, admissibility of each application (binary: eligible/not eligible; admissible/not admissible).
- Check relevance against the call’s fixed priorities and eligible activities (binary: relevant/not relevant).
- Systematise eligible and relevant applications by country/region, applicant tier/type, thematic priority(ies), activity types, and beneficiaries.
- Flag issues/risks for the Selecting Committee (SC).

💶 Budget for the assignment:
- Between EUR 3500 and EUR 5200 based on the volume of applications
- 40% paid via bank wire upon signature of agreement and presentation of invoice
- 60% paid via bank wire upon completion of assignment and presentation of invoice

In 2026, in India, the Supreme Court stepped in with a landmark ruling that under India's right to life and dignity, rehabilitation for trafficking survivors is a constitutional right. The court ruled that under coercion or abuse of power, consent is "legally irrelevant". For children, consent was never even on the table. So, "she agreed to do it" won't even stand up in court.

What exactly is "voluntary" about a choice the law itself says cannot be freely made?

The panel brought together Ms Reem Alsalem (UN Special Rapporteur on Violence Against Women and Girls), Ms Valerie Bichelmeier (@mmm.makemothersmatter), Ms Janaína Albuquerque (FiLiA @haguemothers), Ms Saeda Ahmad AbuOdeh (@al_haq_organization, Palestine), and Ms Alicia Gómez (La Colmena, Colombia) — alongside representatives of the co-sponsoring States.

Women are expected to bear children, raise children, care for children, sustain families across borders, compensate for demographic decline, and are increasingly subjected to reproductive exploitation. Yet mothers themselves have disappeared from law, public policy, and institutional language.

Most migrant and refugee women are mothers, and the consequences of this political neglect are particularly severe for them.
