Truly an indescribable feeling still. I just want to thank my mentors for giving me guidance and allowing me to dream big with this concept. I also want to thank anyone who has sat with me and imagined what this world could look like. I also want to thank my parents for allowing me to dream big and be able to tell their story from the Liberian War.
The Black Cyborg is more than just my thesis project, this to me is the next step into taking our inherited survival skills and inspire other black individuals to understand their framework and how to deconstruct and re-contexualize their psyche that we’ve retained post slavery, but taking that understanding and applying that to the future.
My concept explores the future of the black diaspora as technology advances and the complexities of the black psyche in a post-apocalyptic world. It explores the 5 mindsets of the black diaspora post slavery: The Revolutionary, The Lost Soul, The Self-Hating, The Ignorant to the Culture and Struggles, and The Assimilator. This cyborg has been built to be a symbol of black capitalism; to diminishing and flattening the black diaspora to be digestible. My cyborg refuses that framework and redefines and reconstructs itself to become this Divine Machinery, a symbol for revolution and a future for black individuals. I am developing this future about the black diaspora that has yet to be unraveled, but there is still a sense of familiarity to this story as I call references from our senses of touch, smell, and sound.
I call references from past philosophers like Frantz Fanon. He said, “All in all, I grasp my narcissism with both hands and I reject the vileness of those who want to turn man into a machine.” Which is a key signifier of the a necessary and healthy self-love and dignity that we need to take in the face of an oppressive system that seeks to turn individuals into dehumanized, cog-like machines.
THE BLACK CYBORG IS DEEPLY POLITICAL AND SPIRITUAL. IT DOES NOT REJECT NATURE OR ORGANIC EXISTENCE. IT INSTEAD COMES TO TERMS EXISTING BEYOND WESTERN BINARIES OF TECHNOLOGY AND NATURE AND EMBRACES BOTH AS A PART OF BLACK SURVIVAL.
