my summer in Alaska was full of sweet surprises, but having the opportunity to fly around Denali on a sunny day, witness mountaineers actively reach the summit, and then land on glacier was pretty unworldly.

what an outrageously beautiful, inspiring, and humbling mountain towering high into the sky at 20,310 ft. kinda makes a girl want to dream big 💭

thanks @liamandersonnz for making this happen, ‘twas such an incredible experience. 10/10 recommend flying with @talkeetnaair to land on a glacier and get up close and personal with Denali, she’s absolutely magnificent.

first time romping on a glacier and, I must say, it was pretty freaking cool 🧊

shout out to @boulder.water for giving me a tour of your office this summer!

p.s. there are serious dangers involved with glacier travel so if you don’t have the proper knowledge, gear, experienced group or guide, then don’t go 🙃

and this my friends is what I like to call summer bucket list maxing. 10/10 recommend hiking to your next concert, bonus points if it’s to see a band you love at a cool outdoor venue.

oh, and pro tip — download the artist’s albums before hitting trail so you can jam all hike long and scare the bears off with your singing. worked like a charm!!

Trail: Resurrection Pass, hiked south to north
Stats: 39.43 mi, 3,992 ft gain, 3 days 2 nights
Shuttle: booked through Wildman’s in Cooper Landing
Venue: @creekbendcafe
Band: @houndmouth
Guard dog’s backpack: @wilderdog

trending north, part 3 — greetings from the Arctic Ocean!!

To my friends and family who asked me earlier this year what my plans were when I moved back into my van, to which I replied, “head north” … this is what I really meant.

I have officially driven to the northernmost road-accessible point in North America which is also considered the start of the PanAmerican Highway.

Since the days when van life was just a crazy little idea in my head, I promised myself that if I ever figured out how to live on the road, then I must drive up to Alaska for a summer. And that trip to the north of the north would signify the start of my PanAmerican journey. A dream of mine that I plan to fulfill in this lifetime or die trying.

So this was more than just an adventurous roadtrip to reach the Arctic Ocean. It memorialized the start of my PanAmerican journey, which is incredibly scary yet exciting to say out loud.

Especially given that I have no real plan or timeline. I don’t know if I want to complete this entire journey solo or in company. I envision myself driving a different rig through Latin America which means parting ways with the home I built. My Spanish is incredibly rusty. And I’m unsure if it will be one continuous journey or have several intermissions along the way. There are so many unknowns, but all I do know is that I’m starting to live out one of my biggest dreams and I can’t wait to see how it will all unfold — in its own time and in its own way.

And this little Arctic roadtrip was the perfect reminder to myself that it’s about the journey, not the destination✨

Noted.

The only advice the fear mongerers missed is Billy, for fucks sake, please don’t turn left.

Definitely not worth 1 minor ding in the windshield, $560.89 in gas, and 0 polar bear sightings.

I think this is what they call a good omen 🌈🌈

‘twas extra special timing as I start my journey to the northernmost drivable point in North America and the unofficial start of the Pan-American Highway. YEEE!!!

trending north, part 2

after wintering in Canada, I had no option but to finally make the Alaskan summer I’ve dreamt about since the inception of my van life journey a reality.

I was closer to Alaska than I’d ever been before but it was still a freaking haul to the border. 40 hours of drive time from Lake Louise, Alberta to the Mat-Su Valley of Alaska. And that doesn’t account for a slow van, gas stops, or food and potty breaks for a human and a pup.

I’ve driven my van from coast to coast in the US but 40 hours of drive time makes this roadtrip my biggest straight shot yet. Oh and while we’re at it, let’s do it without a caravan and in winter just for funsies.

One thing you should know about me is that I’m a real sucker for some hot springs. If there’s a possibility of a hot spring stop being a part of the equation, I’m probably most definitely in. So of course my motivation to get through the first big drive day was a stop at Liard River Hot Springs.

After a long relaxing soak, I decided to keep pushing a little further before calling it a night. And, in doing so, I stumbled upon a bison crossing the road at sunset. It was actually super hard to see the bison with the sun glaring directly into my eyes so it did give me a bit of a scare but it was also such a special moment from this roadtrip.

The next morning we woke up in the Yukon. I kept looking at my little dot on the map and saying to myself “wow, we’re up here!”

While driving I caught a glimpse of this sign in the my side view mirror. It was most definitely deserving of a u-turn to appreciate it in all its glory. By far my most favorite sign of the entire trip and that’s saying something because our next stop was…

The infamous Sign Post Forest. It was really fun to scan the signs and see just how far and wide people have traveled to this very spot in the middle of nowhere, Yukon.

Note that this was an extremely overstimulating experience but a really unique stop and solid excuse to get out and stretch the legs nonetheless!

Just my dirty van and some snowy mountains. Someone please help me understand why I thought it was necessary to get a car wash BEFORE driving the Alcan?? I’m still trying to taken in Mile 0 Alaska Highway by @mik__adams

trending north, part 1

after wrapping up my Canadian ski tour, I decided to take the scenic route towards the start of the Alcan.

highway 93, aka The Icefields Parkway, is a 144 mile road connecting the town of Lake Louise in Banff NP to the town of Jasper in Jasper NP.

it was cold, it was icy, it was without cell service, it was spectacular sightseeing around every bend.

since hitting the road, I’ve reserved the winter months for mountains and the summer months for ocean. that means there’s a lot of mountainous terrain I’ve only driven through in the dead of winter. however, I’ll admit that this route in particular has me itching to witness it with lush green landscapes and thawed turquoise alpine lakes.

but that’s for another time. so for now, we’ll keep pointing north.
