Nothing Ends by 84 Tigers is officially out in the world. It was a journey to get here and I’m very grateful to everyone involved.

Thanks to my brother for being a musical partner and foundation in my life and bands for all these years. All the way back to when we’d get books of tablature to learn Metallica, RHCP, and Led Zeppelin songs before we started bands.

Thanks to Jono for keeping the beat and being a fun, creative, and driven partner in this project. His ideas and dedication help drive this thing forward and get me unstuck when I overthink things.

Thanks to John at Spartan Records for his insight and ideas since the day I sent him details about what we were up to. He helped us focus and tell the story of what the record was about, even when the Tigers and Mariners were battling it out in the playoffs.

Thanks to Marc for his incredible talent and beautiful studio. His input and insight are all over this record and it wouldn’t be the same without him.

Thanks to Alan for mastering it and bringing out all the highs and lows, and making it sound big and epic.

Thanks to Rocky for singing on it and being such a creative inspiration over the years. He took “Two Rivers” to a whole new level and I still get choked up when I hear it.

Thanks to Aaron for lending his voice to “Regeneration Days.” It’s surreal to hear him on it. Seaweed has been a musical inspiration for me since I heard them in the mid-90s.

Thanks to Dan for letting us practice at his place and being there to support with good vibes, good lighting, laughs, and pizza.

Thanks and love to Katy for her love and support through all of this. On top of all of the other day-to-day life responsibilities, she held it down so I could spend some time on my art. That meant the world to me.

And big thanks to all of you for listening, sharing, liking, commenting, and sending good words as we built up to it. It means a lot and makes me beyond thankful I stumbled on this musical journey so long ago.

Lastly, this record is dedicated to Trav, Tyler, Dale, Jonny, and Jimmy. Friends we lost to soon, but this Emerson quote helped me out: “There is no end in nature, but every end is a beginning.”

Running with 59,000 other people for 26.2 miles through all five NYC buroughs on a perfect November day was a mind-boggling, once-in-a-lifetime experience. The largest marathon in history. The roars of the crowds, the signs, the music, the cloudless blue sky, the smiles, the tears, and everything in between.

The journey to the finish line started in February when our five-man team, The Ramblers, signed up to raise money for leukemia research as our path to entry. In the end, our team raised over $23k for Blood Cancer United. A huge thank you to everyone who donated. That money will go directly to research that will save lives.

Don’t let these pictures and videos fool you. It was hard…really hard. I cramped up around mile 18 with sharp pain in both legs that came and went. By mile 20, I hated the taste of water, Gatorade, and energy gels. The inclines of the last few bridges were brutal. The crowd cheered, but I veered between trying to savor every moment and just wanting it to be over. And I’m not too proud to say I teared up a few times, overwhelmed with exhaustion and gratitude.

Luckily I ran into my brother around mile 20 and we gave each other company and support for the final stretch. As we wound our way through Central Park, we spotted our friends and family on the sidelines. A huge lift. It was all surreal and dream like as the sun was starting to settle behind the trees for the golden hour.

And then it was over.

Ben and I stepped over the finish line after one of the most incredible and intense days of my life. We met up with the rest of The Ramblers and shared hugs, laughs, pizza, and burgers, wrapped in our orange ponchos, taking it all in. I looked at my watch as we sat at an outdoor patio surrounded by family and friends after the race — 55,000 steps for the day.

Massive thanks and appreciation to friends and family who made the trip, to my Rambler teammates, and to everyone who supported, donated, or checked in throughout this wild ride. I’m beyond grateful. ❤️🏅 by @mike.reed

Very fun episode for your humble hosts today as Blake and Mark welcome Mike Reed to the show. Mike has spent the last couple of years focused on his newest project, @84tigersband , but this year we all get to the enjoy the return of Small Brown Bike to Fest.

The Michigan band formed 30 years ago and this fall they are celebrating the 25th anniversary of their classic album “Dead Reckoning” which they will play in full at Fest this fall and then in other parts of the country later this fall and winter.

Mike talks about coming up in small town Michigan, finding punk at a young age, making mixtapes, following zines and labels to find new music, ending up on No Idea and much more from the early years of SBB.

We also talk about some memorable shows (a bowling alley show with Cursive?), what happened right before Fest 2, playing Fest with SBB, 84 Tigers, and more, as well as what it’s been like getting the band back together in the wake of loss.

I photographed @smallbrownbike behind @woodshedstudios while they were recording their “Nail Yourself To The Ground” EP. I lived about a mile from the studio, and I think Ben had asked me to come by and do some shots of them recording. I think I convinced them to do some group shots outside while they were taking a break. I’ve always loved this photo because nobody is really paying attention to the shoot and it’s imperfect, but I think that is what makes it work. A spontaneous moment on a midwestern spring day with snow still on the ground. They’re going on tour this fall for the 25th anniversary of their album “Dead Reckoning”.
