Pressure review by @mike__aina “When you know where you’re from, you know where you’re going.” Danny Bailey’s @itsdannybwoi Pressure explores the story of the barrel children and their experiences in the supposed “motherland” of England. Pressure introduces us to the experiences of the barrel children and the difficulties many faced acclimatising to life in England, with those experiences continuing to shape them well into adulthood. It also examines the fractured homes and families left in the wake of migration. People were promised a better life in Britain, only to arrive and discover a very different reality. The play starts boldly and immediately grabs our attention through its use of physical theatre and dance, paying homage to Caribbean spirituality and tradition. Despite everything I took away from the story, parts of the writing left me confused and with several unanswered questions. Michael’s condition, for example, never felt completely clear to me, nor did the practical reality of who cared for him while Paulette was at work and why she was the one assigned to care for him, I also questioned some of Judie’s decision-making. She desperately wants to create change and build a better future for her people yet makes decisions that are ultimately detrimental to the very cause she is fighting for, eventually resulting in her having to abandon her sons. There is also Paulette’s pregnancy with her second child, where I was left unsure about exactly what happened to that child. These moments made parts of the story feel rushed. There is a lot that Pressure wants to explore, and perhaps with more time some of those ideas and character journeys could have been given the space they needed to translate more clearly. Overall, I enjoyed Pressure and came away having learned something too. There is a lot to admire here, particularly across the performances, direction, movement and technical elements. I’d be very interested to see what this production could become with more development time and a bigger budget. ★★★½ — 3.5/5 Pressure runs from 10–12 September @brxhousetheatre. @officialbighalf — COMPLETED! 🏅🏃🏾‍♂️ I’m proud of myself for this one. My fitness journey hasn’t always been easy over the last couple of years. Between my schedule, life and if I’m keeping it real, outright laziness at times 😂 staying consistent has definitely been a challenge. 13.1 miles! The furthest I’ve ever ran before. I didn’t even get to train as much as I would’ve liked, but the most important thing is… I DID IT! And knowing I did it for such a good cause makes the moment even sweeter❤️ I want to thank God because he got me through it, especially after mile 11 😅 I want to thank my @826active family for the opportunity, motivation and support, to my brother @michaelstephen3 You are an inspiration, what you have built with 826 has changed lives, I’m glad I can witness and be apart of your greatness too, thank you so much, I’m proud of you ❤️ My brother @2humble2stumble24 Thank you for doing the race with me, having you by my side helped me more than you’ll ever know, we did it bro 💪🏾🏃🏾‍♂️ And finally a massive THANK YOU to everyone who has donated and supported so far. CAPPING! AT THE COURTYARD THEATRE What a journey and wholesome full circle moment! When I first got back into acting after a long break, my sister @msmads___ shared the stage with me, fast forward 7 years, she’s become a wife, mother and a teacher. Now she can add playwright and director to her résumé!
