Had a blast at the 2026 Mavericks Media Game. Shoutout to Mavs PR for offering a great way for us to interact and get to know the team’s new coaching staff & other members of the organization before training camp starts this weekend.

I had more turnovers than points, but I made a few hustle plays and dished out a couple of assists, my favorite of which went to my @sportsdaydfw teammate, @lassimak.dmn. Hopefully the rest of the footage gets burned lol.

Also swapped jerseys with my former @dallasnews teammate, @ronknowssports šŸ˜‚.

Year 5 is almost here. Still thankful for it all. šŸ

Happy belated Founders’ Day to all of my good brothers of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. šŸ¤™šŸ¾

Couldn’t do much to celebrate yesterday, but I got a chance to represent the frat on @cw33dfw with my guy @danieljesteve. We talked all things Mavs, including Cooper Flagg’s rookie season, Anthony Davis’ return from injury, Ryan Nembhard’s historic week and more. So much has changed since my last homecoming in 2021. Nashville is completely unrecognizable. I’m living out the dream I had when I left. My beard’s fully grown. TSU’s campus looks different, too.

At the same time, so much is still the same. The people. The love. The food lol. A feeling of nostalgia was there. The same feeling we had when we were students — back when we wished for the lives we have today — all came back in one weekend. The vibes were immaculate. You just had to be there. It was the perfect send-off into the season.

Had a recent conversation with Dallas Mavericks legend Dirk Nowitzki ahead of his foundation’s 7th annual celebrity tennis classic. It was a great opportunity to learn more about the work his foundation is doing to help provide funding for organizations focusing on children’s wellbeing, health and education. We also talked about rookie Cooper Flagg, who could someday be next in line as the face of the Mavs — a title Nowitzki held for over two decades. šŸ€šŸ taken in Dallas, Texas by @mikecurtis2

Had a blast last night at @jeezy’s 20-Year Anniversary of TM-101 Orchestra Tour. Copped a ticket two hours before the show. Forgot to grab an umbrella, but weathered the storm. Ran into my good brother @str8_innov8ion while jogging in the rain, which made the whole night worth it. It was truly beautiful to witness a theatre full of Black folks dressed in their Sunday best rapping trap music word for word lol. And shoutout to my guy @_jcscott for making sure I met the moment with my tux. šŸ taken in Dallas, Texas by @mikecurtis2

There’s something about #NABJ25 that instantly made it one of my favorite conventions. Maybe it’s because we were all in Cleveland celebrating the 50th anniversary of the organization that brings us together every summer.

We celebrated each other’s wins. We learned as much as we could about our ever-evolving industry. A lot of us overcame challenges throughout the year, privately and publicly, and we encouraged each other for making it to the other side. We were poured into by our mentors and we paid it forward by pouring into the next generation of journalists. And of course, we turned up for a great cause.

It happens every year, but this one felt different. It could be as simple as being present and paying attention to how good it felt being surrounded by everyone, no matter how close or distant, realizing how far we’ve come in our respective careers.

I witnessed one of the greatest pioneers in sports journalism, @leon.h.carter, inducted into the NABJ Hall of Fame. What he’s done to advocate and support minority journalists is immeasurable and I’m grateful to be part of that number. S/O to SJI āœŠšŸ¾ Also, I spoke on my second panel alongside an incredible group of journalists about the pros and cons of AI in sports journalism. I made new friends and reconnected with old ones. I also completed one year as VP-Print for @nabjsports under our phenomenal chair, @tareiawlee.

Most importantly, I recharged my battery and left that convention inspired to do more impactful work. I know the best is yet to come and I’m already looking forward to next year in Atlanta. šŸ taken in Cleveland, Ohio by @mikecurtis2

I spent some of yesterday afternoon at a 7-Eleven in Irving, TX. Not because I needed a slushee for this Texas heat, but because @shaq was there promoting his new beverage, BeatBox.

We talked about his latest investment, his experience as an entrepreneur, the Mavs and his impression of Cooper Flagg, the presumptive top pick in next week’s NBA Draft. He was a great interview and cracked jokes throughout, but I think his favorite part of the conversation was when I was told I had one question left. šŸ˜‚ taken in Irving, Texas by @mikecurtis2

PJ Washington missed multiple Mavs games last season for the birth of his son because he understands that basketball is temporary, but fatherhood is for life🄹 #MFFL

PJ and his father Paul spoke with The Dallas Morning News about the profound impact of fatherhood and the new perspective it has given PJ.

I turned 34 earlier this week. To celebrate, I took a solo trip to Cancún. I soaked up some sun on the beach everyday. I rode jet-skis for the first time. I jumped off 20-foot platforms into Cenotes, even though I can’t swim šŸ˜‚. I checked a lot of firsts off my bucket list. No, I didn’t see any NBA players who are ā€œgone fishingā€ for the offseason, but I did have a couple of reminders that this really cool job has allowed me to see parts of the world I would’ve never imagined growing up as a kid from Saginaw. This trip was special — and God had me covered from start to finish. I did everything I wanted to do, met some dope people along the way and got a little taste of peace. I’m hoping to maintain some form of that peace for the rest of Chapter 34. šŸ taken in CancĆŗn, MĆ©xico by @mikecurtis2

I walked into the doors of The Dallas Morning News for the first time one year ago yesterday. It was the start of a new journey on my marathon, one that led to me covering the playoffs for the first time and unknowingly my first NBA Finals. I’ve experienced so much in such a short amount of time, and once again grew comfortable with being uncomfortable. I’ve written some really cool stories over the last 365, met some incredible people and have grown immensely personally and professionally. To say that I’ve been challenged is an understatement. I didn’t know that I’d be going from covering the Finals to covering the most shocking trade in NBA history in a matter of eight months. Needless to say, it hasn’t been boring. šŸ˜‚ It’s not lost on me that my first day a year ago fell on the day of the biggest solar eclipse in a century. I should’ve known then that I was in for a wild year. Looking forward to Year 2 and many more. šŸ
