Thursday 16th July

Photography Group Show Opening

@mikeeeeeo · @justabitof_sk · @bengraville

This exhibition feels like a fitting way to mark the next chapter of the space.

As we work out our new summer rhythm, we’re so gassed to welcome local photographers Mike Oughton, SK and Ben Graville for our first exhibition opening of the season and our first under the @ToGather banner.

Bringing together a curated selection of photographs, the exhibition offers three distinct perspectives on Deptford, the neighbourhood and world that surrounds us. Through portraits, street scenes, architectural details and quiet observations, the works explore the area’s history, its everyday rhythms, its people and the spaces that connect them.

Together, the exhibition forms a collective portrait of this place many of us call home. A celebration of the beauty found in the everyday, the communities that shape our streets and the myriad of stories that unfold around us.

Join us from 6pm for the opening night. Expect DJs playing pure vibes (more to share on that next week), drinks flowing from the bar, plenty of conversation and the opportunity to spend time with the artists and their work.

These nights are always more than exhibition openings, they’re a reason to celebrate our community and to gather together.💜💫🙏🏽

Every day’s a school day.

Day 57- Today I learned a bit about serendipity. I was strolling along the high street for coffee when a booming voice started shouting. I turned around expecting to witness an altercation, only to see a man calling the attention of a woman who’d dropped her packet of cigarettes behind her. As she gratefully retrieved her fags, I realised the voice belonged to Bob, a man I’d photographed a year previously and have been looking out for, for ages to give him the print I’d had made. He recognised me after a prompt and agreed to wait the ten mins for me to collect it from home. And when I returned with the picture, he was chuffed enough with it to let me photograph him again. Striking the same troubadour pose as he did in the original shot, completely undirected by me. #everdaysaschoolday taken in Deptford High Street by @mikeeeeeo

Every day’s a school day.

Day 56 - I discovered what manifestation feels like today. Whilst sitting on the Docklands Light Railway with golden hour light streaming through the windows on an elevated section. I thought ‘wouldn’t it be a great image if the person opposite was bathed in light’ and the next moment the train obliged by rounding a bend to make the sun illuminate them perfectly. And I lifted my camera just as they momentarily closed their eyes to bask in the warmth of the golden rays. Manifesting, baby! #everydaysaschoolday by @mikeeeeeo

Every day’s a school day

Day 55 - Today I learned a bit about enterprise.
When I encountered Ibrahim on the Playa de la Malagueta.
His living is selling beach blankets and hiring out parasols to sunbathers. Alongside a whole economy of sun lounger lenders, masseuses, jewellery sellers and people serving drinks and fruit on the hot sands.
It was the last day of our Malaga trip, so I offered him the cheap parasol we’d bought for the duration of our stay in case he could get some use from it. We exchanged virtually no words. But his willingness to let me take his photograph told me he may be able to make a few €uros out of the umbrella before it falls to bits. #everydaysaschoolday taken in Málaga, Spain by @mikeeeeeo

Every day’s a school day.
Today I realised the similarity between cameras and dogs. In that having either of them about one’s person makes striking up conversations with strangers far more likely.
I met @eduardorincongallardo and his partner, Estrella in the magnificent Antigua Casa de Guardia wine bar, beside the Mercado Central de Atarazanas food market in Malaga (also magnificent). I’d just come from the food market, where I’d eaten standing up (swipe 1 🤌🏼) and was now just regretting letting the barman choose which wine he should pour me from the choice of barrels (swipe 2, sweet local red, too syrupy for me). When I noticed Eduardo and Estrella eyeing my camera that was similar to the one he had around his neck. And like dog owners in the park, we got chatting. I’m pleased to say the encounter was much more enjoyably short and sweet than the vino. They were a lovely couple, over for a wedding from Mexico City. He explained that he’d recently taken up photography as a creative outlet from his finance job. When I said I had recently taken up photography as an antidote to my writing career, they immediately started googling me on their phones and asking what film of mine they should watch. So, thank god the sweet wine hadn’t gone to my head and made me exaggerate my writing chops. As that would have been as embarrassing as splattering myself with the contents of a split dog mess bag in the park. #everydaysaschoolday taken in Málaga, Spain by @mikeeeeeo

Sir, when a person is tired of Deptford Market, they are tired of life. For there is on Deptford Market all that life can afford.
