Tomorrow it has been a week, but somehow it still feels like yesterday. All the feelings, the people, the words, the songs, the tears, the laughter and everything in between are engraved so deeply in my mind that it feels like it must have just happened.

I would like to make a statement regarding my race yesterday and decision not to finish. I gave an interview directly after and it has caused some mixed reactions online. First off, I appreciate people reaching out and their kind words. Luckily these messages overshadow the negative ones, but it surprises me how many people use their precious time to try and kick someone that’s already down. It’s something I have often seen online, but not experienced myself like this. I have thick skin, but I would love for these people to take a look in the mirror and ask themselves why they feel the need to spread so much negativity.

That being said, I am responsible and held accountable for my own actions. In a moment of weakness I decided that anything other than a medal wasn’t worth fighting for. I praise myself for being a runner who never gives up, who always battles to the line, not worrying about the result. Even Monday after falling with 1k to go. This time I analyzed the result during the race, without knowing all the factors, rather than after crossing the finish line. It’s something I regret today. I lost the mental game that distance runners play during tough races. It’s something for myself to reflect on and learn from, so it doesn’t happen again. I was clearly still in the fight for a high placement (which is still very good!). I was so stuck on that medal mindset, especially after not getting the wanted result in the 5K, that I forgot every spot is worth fighting for. I owe it to myself, and to all the people supporting me in my career to at least fight until the line. Seeing the people close to me suffer just as much hurts me the most.

From here I will try to take away the positives. I have never actually felt to be in contention for any medals before this championship, and here we are now, not settling for anything less. It’s a step I had to make. Consider it made.

Thanks again to everyone supporting. We move forward.

Mike Foppen | European Athletics Championships

Sometimes racing goes exactly to plan. Most of the time, it doesn’t.

Mike arrived yesterday having done everything he could. The training was done. The fitness was there. The preparation was in place.

But 4,000 metres into the race, a fall brought it to an early end.

It doesn’t change the work that came before it, or the shape we know Mike is in. If anything, the hunger for what comes next is even greater.

10 years ago I won my first and last national title over 1500m. I got the chance to win another one today, but unfortunately had to settle for bronze 🥉. Makes me feel old, but good to know this old man still has some speed in the legs.

Took a few days to recover from a brutal 5000m in Hengelo on Sunday 🥵. Racing at 15h in 30 degrees and full sun definitely was an interesting experience. 13.19 for 5th not a bad place to be. Things are moving in the right direction! Eugene next. 🔄
