A Friday night on the town (and I forgot my gown 😝)!
Off Mel and I go to @drphillipsctr to see my friend John DiDonna and his theater group @phantasorlando perform … Frankenstein! Anybody heard of that dude?
It’s a pleasant night to be out on the town, and with a cold spell coming, Fall is finally arriving in Orlando. Can’t wait!

Sweeter than candy!
I love how brilliantly the film Candyman (out today, 1992) expanded Clive Barker’s short story to tap into urban legends, the legacy of slavery, and ghosts in public housing! Talk about a grand buffet 😋 for horror fans!
A great movie to watch during Halloween season, I ask you this: which is better, Tony Todd’s superb (and ultra-scary) performance as you-know-who, or the concept of looking in the mirror 🪞 and saying ….

Inspired by my recent trip to Paris, I’ve been listening a lot to the work of the superb French film composer Philippe Sarde, particularly his score for the movie Tess. It earned Sarde an Oscar nomination in 1980 (he lost to composer Michael Gore for Fame 🤐), and it’s a score I find simply enchanting.
His music for Tess sounds nothing like a traditional Hollywood score; it’s classical, romantic, and has touches of early British folk music and songs. Some of the melodies suggest innocence, hinting at a far simpler time in life.
Sarde’s work deserves far greater recognition outside France; this CD, which also includes music he composed for his other collaboration with director Roman Polanski, The Tenant (both nostalgic and eerie, ominous, hinting of impending death) is a great place to start.

Just read: 1984.
When on 9 hour flights, an absorbing short novel is worth its weight in gold, so I dived into George Orwell’s grim future where the public, including low key Winston Smith, are paranoid about offending leader Big Brother. When Winston discovers that the woman he secretly loves, Julia, is a rebel who loves him back, they carry on a secret, forbidden love affair. But when they get caught, the horror of their existence goes to unbearable extremes.
My verdict: Orwell’s totalitarian future has been so heavily imitated since its release that his dystopian world now feels a tad quaint, not much worse than Florida is today.
Basically a three part book, it’s the middle section - Winston and Julia discover love and happiness for the first time - I found most enjoyable, far more so than the book’s belabored torture scenes.
Still, Orwell did convince me of one thing: Big Brother is a real bitch.

Happy to report that I made it home safely last night, and for the first time in 20 days, got to sleep in my own bed. Home sweet home 🏠 💕 🛌
Mel and I spent Tuesday morning taking a final pleasant stroll though Dublin (photo 2), before saying goodbye to this great city; we caught a cab to the airport, followed by a grueling 9 hour flight ✈️ 😩 from Dublin to Orlando, filled with lots of screaming children. Oh joy 🤭 😱
But eventually we landed safely and caught an Uber home, where somebody was very excited to see us. When we first walked in the door, Beau got scared and ran. But when she heard my voice, Beau began meowing like crazy and didn’t leave my side for the rest of the night 🥰
It’s good to be back!

Favorite albums alert: Heroes (out today, 1977).
Back in its day, David Bowie’s Heroes felt less commercial than some of his earlier works like Ziggy Stardust; but this superb art rock album has only gotten richer with age.
A major part of the album’s appeal is the hypnotic title track: the use of the song in films like Jojo Rabbit or Bowie’s live performance during the collapse of the Berlin Wall have helped give it the status of a rock classic.
But the rest of the album is just as captivating, with its sublime mix of hard-charging rockers (“Beauty And The Beast”), intricate instrumentals (“Sense Of Doubt”) and even a touch of disco/dance music (“The Secret Life Of Arabia”) being equally seductive.
One of my Top 10 favorite albums.

Amazing who you bump into in Ireland on your final day … like James Joyce!
1-4: As a writer ✍️, I was thrilled to discover that Dublin hosts a Museum Of Literature devoted to its literary legends like Joyce and Samuel Beckett. Ireland’s often violent and troubled history has inspired some brilliant writers to create! Learning more about them is a treat.
5-8: So is wandering around, seeing Dublin’s magnificent historic churches, unique way of celebrating Christmas 🎄 😝, beautiful parks with pushy gulls, and passion for whiskey (the Jameson Irish Whiskey here is superb!)
9: And the meals! This Butternut Squash Soup got an 11 on a scale of 10; I will sorely miss the local restaurants.
That’s it, folks. Trip over, time to head home and face that “real world” thingie again. Thanks for coming along for the ride.

Ready for the holidays? If you’re celebrating the Halloween season, try watching Black Christmas (out today, 1974), one of my favorite horror/slasher films.
Ths old horror chestnut of “the killer in the attic” dates as far back as Hitchcock’s The Lodger in the 1920s, but nobody did it better than director Bob Clark in this chilling tale of sorority girls gearing up for the Christmas holidays who have a problem …
… in the attic.
Come to think of it, it’s fun to watch on both Halloween and Christmas!

Begorrah! The luck of the Irish is with me as we arrive in the charming town of Cork!
Our overnight ship sailed right into the picturesque beauty of Ireland, and we made our way to the city’s bustling downtown, a find place to spend hours walking and discovering its many delights.
They sure take their Guinness seriously here, and I couldn’t resist sampling the local Fish & Chips (delicious!)
Ireland is the final stop on our whirlwind tour of Africa and Europe, and while I loved France, it’s sure nice to hear folks speak English again! Cheers to this quare day!

Last night we said farewell to France, now it’s Ireland here we come as we hopped aboard the Britany ferries for an overnight, 11-hour sail across the ocean.
2, 3, 4: This is no ferry boat but a 10 level ship with entertainment, a swimming pool, restaurants and bars; we slept well in our cozy cabin as the ocean gently rocked us.
5, 6, 7: And we said farewell to Brest, a city I highly recommend you visit. A highlight was this medieval style Catholic Church with a tragic history; in 1944 it was destroyed after the Nazis set it on fire. But it was rebuilt and continues to enchant locals and visitors alike.

It’s my first time visiting Brest in northern France, a city in Normandy that moves at a much slower pace than Paris.
Naturally we took the train here, then started exploring; the city on the ocean is a treasure trove of historic castles and even a monument erected by the U.S. at the end of World War I. Brest doesn’t seem to have the same reputation as Paris or the French Riviera, but it sure has its own unique charms.
The restaurant at our hotel serves a delicious beef steak and fries; another great reason to come here.

On our last day in Paris, we had dome light rain, so I bought myself a beret. Wow do I look gay in this thing, but hey, if the shoe (beret) fits …
1. We avoided some of the rain by taking a trolly ride around our area; it gets pretty bumpy on these cobblestone streets!
2,3,4: Mel loves visiting old historic cemeteries, so when the rain stopped, we explored two, and Paris has old tombs of remarkable grandeur. We also stopped at some majestic old churches, which you find in abundance here.
5,6: I will truly miss the food here. We found a quaint Lebanese restaurant that serves up amazing beef and chicken kabob; so a toast to how yummy the meals are here.
7. That’s it for Paris, folks! Thanks for joining us along the way!
