all the parts of California I’ve lived in, the sun never looks quite like this. I suppose it’s those iconic LA palm trees, mixed with jet fuel emissions from LAX, mixed with gun smoke, mixed with birria and carne asada, mixed with struggle, immigration, lowriders, and mariachi. Whatever it was, I’ll never forget that color of the sun in the afternoon. taken in Hermosa Beach, California by @mikehigherentsync

We are now in the third week of Advent, which is a big time of year for people. It is a time of preparation and waiting, because even as everything is dying and falling asleep and falling off, something brand new is coming. Hope is coming. And so one of the messages of Advent is, don’t weep over leaves. The belief is that enough hope and tenderness will lead to world peace, one mind at a time. All nations will come together in kindness and justice, swords will be beaten into plowshares, spears into pruning hooks. This is a little hard to buy with a world stage occupied by-well, I’m not going to name names. But setting aside one’s tiny tendency toward cynicism, in the meantime, in Advent, we wait; and hope appears if we truly desire to see it. Maybe it’s in tiny little packets here and there, hidden in the dying grasslike winter wildflowers, but we find it where we can, and exactly as it comes to us, while the days grow dark. We remind ourselves that you can only see the stars when it is dark, and the darker it is, the brighter the light breaking through. Advent is about the coming of Emmanuel, which means “God with us,” and so as the fields outside our windows go to sleep, we stay awake and watch, holding to the belief that God is with us, is close and present, and on duty. I want that belief, and that patience, I checked the box on the form choosing that. But it has not been forthcoming. I have instead been feeling a little what is the psychiatric term? “Crazy” My mind has been doing a worry chant, WORRYworryworryworryworryworryworryworryWORRYworryworry ... It’s not that I don’t have a lot of faith. It’s just that I also have a few tiny mental issues. And I want to fix them all, and I want to do that now, or at least by tomorrow afternoon, right after lunch. So I’ll tell you what the promise of Advent is: It is that God has set up a tent among us and will help us work together on our stuff. And this will only happen over time. by @mikehigherentsync

A lot of y’all don’t like my tone. I could live with that. What I can’t live with is peace workers being hit by drones and civilian boats in Venezuela minding their own business and a manmade lightning strike where 11 all die. I can’t live with purpose starvation while begging for peace prizes. This snake is eating itself. What upside down world is this when the voice of logic is Margie Taylor Greene? Of course, Trump wrote that note to Epstein. This is obvious. The snake is eating itself. Supreme Court say, yo, you can’t discriminate in college recruitment. You’re not supposed to consider color or origins, but ice. If y’all see someone that don’t talk right, ruin their life. The same court that said Trump can’t take away Harvard’s funding said, you could look at brown skin and if they talk funny, they probably got to go. The snake is eating itself. Charle Kirk, splashed on in Utah. His life taken at the very moment he was dismissing the taking of other lives. They asked that man about trans people in mass shootings. Somehow, he conflated that to gang violence, a little sneak disk to people of color. Victim blaming is beneath me, but honestly, my heart is somewhere between no one should ever experience this and fuck around and find out for real. These are the conversations we have with these little YNs. You keep talking that gang talk. You talk a lot of shit for somebody that ain’t bulletproof. A desperate attempt to stop impending doom. I wish this on no one. I empathize with him deeply. And with those who feel the lack of empathy. You were the one saying, alligator lives matter. And there are 65 million meals waiting for the alligators. Hint, there are 65 million Latinos in our country. Now you are desperately in need of the very thing that you denied others. And that my friend is heartbreaking. I’m sorry. I’m sorry my children are raised in a world like this. “More death, more guns. I’m sorry a school shooting happened within minutes. More parents having to go back to clean out a fifth grader’s room. I’m sorry. These are not days of celebration. They’re days of internal confliction because I am a human. taken in Los Angeles, California by @mikehigherentsync
