I am devastated to share that in my cancer has returned as Stage 4. It has spread to my skeleton and liver, and I will be on treatment for the rest of my life. I am presently rebuilding my life to match my new physical and mental abilities. Bryce and I need your help with this. I am moving from work to disability, and we need your help making this transition focused and gentle for us. We want a strong start to this journey on strong feet and a quiet mind. We are looking to cover four months of essentials (rent, specialized food, and medical costs) so we can find our next space in peace. My reality is frequent hospital visits and a new treatment regimen—both at home, and at the Arthur Child Cancer Centre. My bones are fragile and full of cancer; I even fractured a rib just lifting a water bottle. My liver has swollen to the point that eating is difficult and painful. Two weeks ago I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. This wasn’t on my bingo card for my 30’s but I guess why not make some art about it? 🤷 🏳️‍⚧️ Being a young enby (non-binary) breast cancer patient has presented me only crumbs of information, so I hope me sharing my experiences will bolster the info surrounding this specific intersection of patients. It’s also my goal with this comic to further humanize the breast cancer experience, present this info in a fresher manner, better connect y’all to my experience, and well, release some of the anxiety, trauma, and absurdity that this diagnosis has brought into my life. 😮‍💨 You can follow along here, or check out my website blog (link in bio) to read my accompanying thoughts, feelings, and additional info. I will be aiming to update weekly, dependant on my capacity. I have lots of thoughts swirling around my brain I’m excited to share— I’ve been learning almost as much as I’ve been feeling 🥴 I've also set up a gofundme to alleviate the ongoing financial stress this diagnosis is putting on me. It is with profound and sadness and disbelief that we say goodbye to beloved Calgary visual artist and drag performer, Mike Hooves, whose cancer journey peacefully concluded on Wednesday, July 22, 2026 while surrounded by the care and compassion of their loved ones. Fiercely and unapologetically non-binary, Mike will be remembered as a vibrant personality and an undeniable talent. Even through hardship and illness, they were a triumphant beacon of queer joy and creativity. A graduate of @albertauarts , Mike developed a unique artistic voice and successful arts practice. As an illustrator and muralist, Mike left indelible marks throughout Calgary. Following the completion of their first mural in 2020 as part of the @palimpshed project, Mike grew to be a prolific name in public art. Some notable pieces include the @hellovintage_yyc facade in Inglewood, “Lone United” for @calgarypride , “Vivid” for AUArts, as well as numerous Roadworks murals for @yycbump that are displayed throughout the city. Mike’s art wasn’t limited by medium, and they found personal and artistic fulfilment through their webcomic Enby Breast Cancer (2023), numerous entries in the @quickdrawyyc annual Animation Lockdown series, installations such as Trans Is A Flower (2022) and Rhinestone Cowfolx (2026—on display until October at @werklundcentre ), as well as their short films G.E.M. (2017) and Polymorph (2017), the latter of which screened at BFI Flare in London, and featured cinematography from Mike’s partner of 10 years, and eventual wife, Bryce. An exceptionally talented drag performer, Mike’s persona Mx Jendr brought joy and charisma to stages throughout the city, and resulted in the creation of @drag.sings alongside @kennaburima , a revue show that showcases the talented voices of Calgary’s incredible drag performers. We aren’t taking things for granted. Yesterday Mike had a health scare that resulted in being taken to hospital by EMS. It was a frightening incident that we both worried was the result of neurological concerns. Thankfully a CT scan showed that Mike did not develop any new or worsening conditions. We’re feeling immensely grateful that Mike is safe and unharmed, and that we have each other following such a scary and uncertain situation. We’re also sending love to the bystanders that helped us during the incident, and to all of the medical professionals that have worked tirelessly to provide Mike with the care they need. #blessedwiththebest❤️ by @mikehooves
