THE LAST HEIR OF BRADBURY MANOR out now
↓ Details Here

POSTS STORIES REELS

The hardcover edition of The Last Heir of Bradbury Manor is officially here.

And apparently holding it in my hands triggered a completely normal and proportionate emotional response.

Matte black cover. Gold lettering. Review quotes. Custom flaps. Author bio. Five stars from Readers’ Favorite.

The paperback is still a perfectly respectable book.

The hardcover, however, has presence.

It has weight.

It has structural integrity.

It could potentially be used as a blunt object.

Most importantly, it contains a 1919 Yorkshire estate, a dead gardener, generations of buried family secrets, and a young woman increasingly convinced that something inside her childhood home is very, very wrong.

Available now in hardcover.

The Last Heir of Bradbury Manor is set in Yorkshire in 1919. The novel follows nineteen-year-old Lottie Bradbury, who is called home to her crumbling family estate with an ultimatum: marry or let the Bradbury name die. Before the engagement is sealed, the family gardener is found dead on the manor steps, and his son Arthur claims the house itself killed him, just as it killed Lottie’s mother a decade earlier. As footsteps echo through empty halls and whispers crawl through the dark, Lottie begins digging into the secrets her father spent years burying. Bradbury Manor wants to preserve itself, and Lottie just might be the only way left.

Beneath the supernatural story, the novel explores inheritance, class, family obligation, grief, and the limited choices available to a young woman in the aftermath of the First World War.

Mackenize Martin's Phantoms in Brick and Ivy is an atmospheric and thoughtful exploration of identity, belonging, obsession, and the occasionally blurred distinction between perception and reality.

The book is set in the beautifully realized Carillon College and follows Lacy Daley as she deals with her freshman year. She forms friendships, discovers romance, and becomes fascinated by the mysterious in her new home. Martin excels at bringing Carillon to life, from its shadowy halls, icy-covered brick buildings, and insular academic culture, it felt like a world unto itself.

What stood out to me most was the attention given to the characters and their relationships. Lacy's insecurities, her desire to belong, and her issues with feeling like her authentic self. Complicating things was her evolving relationship with the enigmatic Rowan, which gave the novel a compelling psychological dimension. It explores the uncomfortable territory where affection and devotion can slip into obsession. The rest of the cast, especially Jonah, provided a welcome counterbalance to the darker elements of the story.

While the novel was wrapped in the trappings of a gothic mystery, Phantoms in Brick and Icy was ultimately interested in something I thought more personal: the ways we're haunted by our own memories, expectations, and the preconceived stories we create about others. These ideas are woven throughout Lacy's journey, and culminates in an ending that really made me question what it really means to be haunted.

Readers who appreciate character-driven fiction, dark academia, psychological tension, and an atmospheric approach to storytelling will find plenty to enjoy here. This was an engaging debut that uses a ghost story to explore something deeply human, and I thank Mackenzie for allowing me to experience it.

Congrats, you two. I’ll be reaching out to get your mailing info.

To everyone else: thank you for entering, sharing, tagging, and generally helping me yell about this haunted old house for the past several weeks.

Okay it wasn't the hotdog. The manor chose them. I had nothing to do with it. Somebody help me.

Halloween Movie Marathon 31/31: Halloween (1978)

There was really only one movie that could finish this.

Every Halloween, we watch Halloween. At this point, it’s less a movie choice and more a household tradition.

And honestly, after 30 movies involving haunted houses, cursed videotapes, witches, missing children, vengeful ghosts, questionable husbands, murderous classmates, and several people who desperately needed to stop investigating things… coming back to Michael Myers feels almost comforting.

Almost. What still works about Halloween is how little it needs. A quiet neighborhood. A shape in the distance. A few piano notes. Someone standing where they absolutely should not be standing.

That restraint is probably part of why it still holds up nearly fifty years later. The movie understands that sometimes the scariest thing isn’t what jumps out at you.

It’s what you notice standing there. And then notice again. And then realize is getting closer.

So that’s it.

31 movies.

31 days.

And the traditional Halloween watch to finish it off.

Happy Halloween. 🎃🔪

31/31.

Halloween Movie Marathon 30/31: Weapons (2025)

At 2:17 in the morning, almost an entire classroom of children gets out of bed, walks out of their homes, and disappears. That is one hell of an opening problem.

What I really liked about Weapons is how long it lets everyone try to explain something that clearly does not want to be explained.

Parents need someone to blame. The police need evidence. The town needs a story that makes sense. Everyone has one piece of what happened, and nobody can see the whole thing.

That might be one of the strongest Bradbury Manor connection of this marathon. Lottie spends much of the book doing essentially the same thing: collecting fragments, questioning people, reading old records, and trying to force generations of bizarre events into some kind of rational pattern.

Eventually there comes a point in both stories where you have to consider the deeply inconvenient possibility that the impossible explanation might actually be the correct one.

30 down.

Halloween Movie Marathon 29/31: Hocus Pocus (1993)

Watched this one with the kids, which felt considerably safer than showing them Coraline again and ruining bedtime for a second time.

Three witches return after 300 years, a teenager immediately makes several questionable decisions, and an entire town somehow remains remarkably unconcerned about what is happening around them.

I’ve seen Hocus Pocus enough times that it’s basically Halloween wallpaper at this point, but watching it with the girls is different. It’s silly, creepy without being miserable, and just dangerous enough for kids to feel like they’re getting away with watching something they probably shouldn’t.

There’s even a little Bradbury Manor DNA in there: something terrible happens centuries ago, everyone assumes it’s safely in the past, and then someone comes along and accidentally gives history another chance to cause problems. That particular lesson apparently never gets old.

Also, the Sanderson sisters remain proof that if you commit hard enough to the bit, attempted child murder can somehow become family entertainment.

4.5/5 cursed candles. 🕯️🧙‍♀️

Some objects in The Last Heir of Bradbury Manor are there for atmosphere. This one changes everything.

Lottie finds her mother’s diary buried beneath a stack of old fashion magazines in the bottom drawer of her vanity: worn leather, familiar handwriting, and a date from more than a decade earlier.

𝐌𝐚𝐫𝐲 𝐁𝐫𝐚𝐝𝐛𝐮𝐫𝐲, 𝐕𝐨𝐥. 𝐈𝐕.

Until this point, Mary has mostly existed for Lottie as fragments. Other people’s memories. A grave. A perfume bottle. A dress. A woman everyone seems willing to discuss only in carefully edited pieces.

Then Lottie finds her own words. And naturally, 𝐑𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇 𝐃𝐑𝐀𝐅𝐓 𝐌𝐄™ reacted to this discovery by having Lottie drop the book, stare at it, wonder why her mother kept a diary, analyze their emotional distance, contemplate every secret Mary might have hidden, question why she wrote instead of confiding in her daughter, and finally kneel down to pick the thing back up.

The final version trusts the object a little more: a worn leather book. Her mother’s handwriting. Thoughts Lottie was never meant to read. That was enough.

For the visual, I used an Edwardian Asprey London leather diary. It isn’t meant to be the literal diary from the novel, but it’s very close to what I pictured: something elegant, private, well-used, and easy to hide beneath a stack of magazines for twelve years.

And unlike most objects in Bradbury Manor, this one actually starts answering questions.

Unfortunately for Lottie, answers are not always an improvement.

Halloween Movie Marathon 28/31: What Lies Beneath (2000)

Michelle Pfeiffer becomes increasingly convinced that something is wrong with her beautiful lakeside home while Harrison Ford would very much prefer that she stop asking questions.

You can probably see why this one works for me.

What Lies Beneath is built around one of my favorite horror ideas: a perfectly respectable life can survive only as long as nobody looks too closely at what’s underneath it.

Beautiful house. Successful family. Carefully maintained appearances. And somewhere beneath all of that, a woman whose story was supposed to stay buried.

That’s pretty close to the engine of The Last Heir of Bradbury Manor. Lottie comes home expecting family obligations and instead discovers that nearly everything she has been told about her family depends on certain questions never being asked.

Naturally, she asks all of them.

Also, Michelle Pfeiffer spends a significant portion of this movie doing exactly what every horror protagonist should apparently avoid: investigating strange noises in an enormous house by herself. Respect.

4/5 extremely suspicious husbands. 🛁👻

I have a confession about this one.

I 𝐥𝐨𝐯𝐞𝐝 this mourning gown description in the rough draft of 𝑇ℎ𝑒 𝐿𝑎𝑠𝑡 𝐻𝑒𝑖𝑟 𝑜𝑓 𝐵𝑟𝑎𝑑𝑏𝑢𝑟𝑦 𝑀𝑎𝑛𝑜𝑟.

Loved it.

Could not, for the life of me, understand why nobody else seemed nearly as excited about it.

Apparently the answer was that 𝐈𝐓 𝐖𝐀𝐒 𝐅𝐈𝐕𝐄 𝐏𝐀𝐑𝐀𝐆𝐑𝐀𝐏𝐇𝐒 𝐋𝐎𝐍𝐆.

In my defense, I had done the research. I had the heavy black wool, the lace cuffs, the velvet neckline, the silk veil, the shoes, the hennin, the black pearls, the onyx rosary, the symbolism of the beads, the symbolism of the veil…

And by God, 𝐑𝐎𝐔𝐆𝐇 𝐃𝐑𝐀𝐅𝐓 𝐌𝐄™ was going to make sure you appreciated every single one of them.

Eventually I came to my senses.

The final version keeps only what actually matters: the weight of the wool, the black veil, the rosary, and the grief underneath all of it.

“Jane lowered a sheer black veil over her face and settled an onyx rosary against her chest. Beneath the mourning clothes, Lottie’s hands trembled.”

That was enough.

For the visual reference, I looked to 15th-century mourning imagery, including depictions of noblewomen in black and contemporary funeral scenes like the ones in this post.

And if you’re wondering why a novel set in 𝟏𝟗𝟏𝟗 suddenly needs historically grounded mourning clothes from the 𝟏𝟒𝟎𝟎𝐬…

There is a reason. A fairly important one. I’ll leave it there. 👀

Halloween Movie Marathon 27/31: Slaughter High (1986)

A group of former classmates returns to their old school for a reunion and discovers that the kid they tormented years ago may have taken the whole “never forget” thing rather seriously.

There’s actually a Bradbury Manor connection buried in here somewhere: the past does not stay politely in the past just because everyone involved would prefer to move on. Or whatever.

Unfortunately, Slaughter High explores that idea with considerably more exploding intestines and considerably less restraint.

This movie is ridiculous. The characters make baffling decisions, the tone wanders all over the place, and at several points I found myself less concerned with who would survive than with whether any of them had ever encountered basic cause and effect.

It was not good.

I did, however, finish it, which feels like an accomplishment worth recognizing.

2/5 deeply regrettable class reunions. 🔪🏫

One of the quieter objects in The Last Heir of Bradbury Manor is this mirror.

It has been hanging near the front stairs for generations, long enough that Lottie recognizes it immediately, but in this scene, that recognition runs deeper than it should.

She knows where it came from. She knows why it was placed there. She understands what it was meant to say about the family who owned it... and that knowledge doesn’t entirely belong to her.

The mirror becomes one of those moments where her own memories and someone else’s begin to blur together. The object is familiar. The history attached to it is familiar. That’s the unsettling part.

I liked using something so ordinary for that moment. No apparition. No dramatic revelation. Just a mirror that has been part of the house for so long that it feels permanent, and then Lottie looks into it and sees something she recognizes.

Just not entirely as herself.

For the visual reference, I used this Venetian mirror frame from the workshop of Baldassare Embriachi, dated 1400–1410. The actual mirror in the novel is only briefly described, but I liked finding something that felt old enough, ornate enough, and just a little strange enough to belong at Bradbury.

Sometimes the best objects in a story aren’t the ones doing anything supernatural, they’re the ones that have simply been there long enough to remember more than the people looking at them.
