So proud of our boy! 2nd place in the Pan American Regional Bench Press Championships in Costa Rica. He seeked and destroyed his last PR pushing it to 330lbs, previously from 319lbs (matching it in his second attempt) weighing just under 145lbs. Unfortunately there was a Mexican kid who was a savage and benched 348lbs.

He has been on this crazy disciplined diet that continued from his competition in January at Vegas to qualify for this comp. He weighs and tracks every macro and eats the most boring and same meals, but it paid off. His lifting schedule is like a second job and he does not miss a lifting day no matter what. Hard work beats talent when talent does not work hard although he has a ton of talent too because there is no way I am lifting anywhere near this weight. He said he felt like crap, but still delivered. by @mikeonzuka

Weighed in and ready to go. 8th lifter.

Nothing better when fading a bit is a monster. I went with the green because they did not have the white. Lisa wanted to try the Pineapple. It was good!

Cameo of the Pineapple during lunch. Lisa sips. I down it.

With the added energy, I might as well get some steps in with my son.

Tuesday started off with some breakfast buffet (same as yesterday) and then I jumped on the treadmill with Caleb after breakfast because I have been eating way too much.

Right across the street from our hotel I saw this Jiu-Jitsu school so we stopped in to check it out. Cool small place that has a coffee shop tied in to it. The promotion board was interesting too. The instructor was a nice guy. I did not catch the lineage.

We went to the Refugio Animal de Costa Rica which is an animal rescue park that is tied to larger national refuges. It was close to our hotel, maybe 10-15 min away. Most of the animals here were pets that became unwanted or were injured so they cannot be released in the wild. Some were turned in because of legislative change that no longer allowed certain pets. There were a few that were injured and if they can be released, they do that. We had a great personal tour that went over every animal there. They all have names and many would come if the keeper called them. We happened to come across turtles mating so I shared the video which was pretty interesting how they work that out (theme song attached). The park seemed small from the outside, but they squeezed a lot of animals in that location.

We got back and had another tasty and wonderfully presented lunch (no choice this time) and all courses were just as good. Caleb and I made a quick walk to the market again and then just hung out in the room where I worked most of the day. by @mikeonzuka

Day one in Costa Rica was pretty uneventful as we just didn't do too much. We just kind of hung out the hotel and had a good breakfast followed by a walk down the street to the supermarket where the minions are big. Beer is iced up ready to go and there's multiple displays.

We came back for lunch at the hotel and their presentation is phenomenal. The food tastes really good too.

Since Caleb is cutting weight and in a strict diet, we wound up our night walking across the little driveway to an Italian restaurant and we thought they were going to be smaller pizzas. We ended up ordering way too much food (we should have shared a pizza) so we only ate about half which we brought back to our room. Thin crust and very tasty. by @mikeonzuka

LAX to SJO. Over 5 hour flight to get to Costa Rica. We had a long layover in LA so I got some work done. We did not get much sleep on the first flight so we are all tired. Hopefully we can get some sleep on this flight. by @mikeonzuka
