“If love should come your way you’ll learn to say
I love you I love you
Only love, love only, only love
Will do
Only love, love only, only love
Comes true
Nothing else, you see, there nothing else
Only love, only love” - John Prine

Happy John Prine’s Birthday to all who celebrate.

These photos were taken a week ago at the truly awesome @rockergallery in Sheffield, Alabama. Amy is proudly displaying a print that we purchased from @robertfelker_art. Robert was cool enough to sign this gorgeous rendering of John and cool enough to spend some quality time with us over @shoalsfest weekend.

Photo pits at large show are usually pretty workmanlike affairs. Everyone’s trying to get their shots while staying out of the way of the other photographers who are trying to do the same thing. There’s usually not a lot of cheering or emoting, regardless of what the band is laying down.

Such was not the case during the absolutely riveting performance Saturday as @jasonisbell and the @drivebytruckers played their first full set together in 2 decades. It felt like sparks were shooting back and forth between the amped crowd and the band (who was flat out crackling) while the shooters were holding on for dear life in the middle. It sometimes takes an effort for me to keep my stoic ‘game face’ on until I get out of the pit but I was keeping it together Saturday until after I stuffed my camera away and was hustling to get out into the crowd. Absolutely unplanned and without conscious thought, I let loose with a fist pump and a “f@&$ yeah!!”. The first person I saw after my outburst was a fellow named ‘Sam’ who was running things up front for Jason and @shoalsfest . He was smiling from ear to ear and he hit me with a high five like we were a couple drunken frat boys celebrating a touchdown.

Shoalsfest 2026 was a blast from start to finish. Jason & the 400 Unit played two killer sets, Jeff Tweedy was quirky and beautiful, and the other supporting acts were strong. For all that, it’s this moment 3 songs into the ‘Truckers Plus’ that I will never forget. ❤️🤘🎶

@aaronleetasjan was wonderful last night at the @tractortavern in Ballard. I’m a bit late to the game on Aaron Lee’s music, having discovered him about a year ago. I’ve been making up for lost time by devouring one album after the other, with this year’s ‘Get Over It, Underdog’ being my most recent obsession. Aaron is a ridiculously talented fellow, being an A++ guitar and piano player, a fantastic singer, and a straight up world class songwriter. As of that isn’t enough, he did a stint slinging guitar in the New York Dolls (!). He charmed the crowd at the Tractor last night, playing a nice selection of tunes and telling hilarious and engaging stories.

I get a little queasy when it comes buddying up to the artists I admire for a photo but my wife grabbed Aaron Lee as he was walking by last night after his set and took a quick shot of the two of us. I’m glad she did. ❤️

Review and photos forthcoming in Back Beat Seattle.

@shoalsfest 2026 is a wrap. Here’s to another great Shoalsfest adventure, here’s to the old friends we got to see again, and here’s to the new friends we made over the weekend.

This trip felt crucial for us. It looked like it might not come together due to some upcoming challenges on our horizon, then it looked as if the weather may go to pot. We stayed on our part of it (especially my incredible wife), then the rock & roll gods delivered on the weather piece of the equation.

Recap/review/photo spread to come on Back Beat Seattle within a few days. Looking forward to hopping on this Seattle bound airplane in just a bit and really looking forward to sleeping in our own bed tonight.

To quote Patterson Hood of the Drive-by Truckers (who absolutely tore it up Saturday night with their old pal Jason Isbell back in the fold): “IT’S FUCKING GREAT TO BE ALIVE!!!”. 🤘🎸❤️🎶 taken in Nashville International Airport - BNA by @mikermitch

It was a great night to be a fan of @tin_pony, @jasonisbell, @rockergallery, and visual art & music in general is the good folks at the Rocker Gallery threw a wonderful bash to get things on the good foot for @shoalsfest. The Rocker Gallery will be hosting events all weekend. See their site for details.

… and away we go!

We’re beyond stoked to be winging our way southeast today in anticipation of Jason Isbell’s @shoalsfest this weekend in Florence, Alabama. We honeymooned at this amazing festival a year ago and are headed back for a second helping to celebrate our one year anniversary in the company of the friends we made last year and a roster of our favorite performers including @jasonisbell, @drivebytruckers, @jefftweedy, @willowavalon, @s.g.goodman, and @stevetrash. The weather forecast calls for some wet stuff but we’re loaded to the gills with rain ponchos, rain hats, extra socks, and our positive attitudes. Heads up @fame_recording_studios, @rockergallery, and all the cool spots we scouted out last year in the Muscle Shoals area: we are headed your way! ❤️

One of the biggest thrills of last year’s fest was when @dbtph of the Drive By Truckers joined Jason Isbell & the 400 Unit onstage for a truly epic version of the Trucker’s ‘Decoration Day’. It must have felt as good to them as it did to us ‘cuz this year Jason and the Truckers will take the stage together for a full set (the entire Decoration Day album, top to bottom) for the first time since Isbell and the band parted ways in 2007. It’s probably a good thing that there may be a little rain as this hardcore fan is sure to be shedding a (happy) tear or two. All I can say is BRING IT! 🤘🤘🤘

I will be covering the entire festival again for Back Beat Seattle and will share a link to my review and photos when we return from our grand adventure.
