Today's wild thing, the 2008 Porsche 911 GT2!!! Yes, it makes my heart sing. 🤩 (Last picture is as good as the first!)

What do you need to know about the 911 GT2? Well, everything!

First, it has the 911 GT3's fizz. The same symphonic steering, grounded suspension, intimate cabin, tight brakes, and snickety shifter are all present. Once you get used to the heavy clutch and memorize the location of the front axle lift button, it's enjoyable and easy to use in town, too.

The car purrs like a happy cat at low RPM, but squeeze the throttle and the GT2 hisses like you've stepped on its tail. That's the twin turbos coming to life and getting ready to knock the wind out of you.

It works like this: Add throttle and the natural torque from the 3.6L Mezger engine is immediately present, tapping you on the shoulder like it wants your attention. Turn around to see who's calling and, a second later, WHAM, the twin turbos slug you in the gut and send you flying down the road! What a devious powerplant. 😈

That wild turbo delivery colors the way the car corners, too. The GT2 is planted and in full control of its rear, but you have to plan your steering work around the timing of the building boost, or it will push you off course.

Wild thing? Absolutely.

AMG has a problem. After decades of ringing driving enthusiasts' Pavlovian bell, the rumbling V8, they now want to fit I4s and I6s into their hot C and E Classes.

Frankly, the new engine noise doesn't have me salivating.

I drove the E53 AMG around crowded Pebble Beach, and this is a comfortable, capacious, and tech heavy toy. It absolutely smashes the daily driving needs. Looks bitching, too.

But does it excite my baser desires? Not without further training to teach this old dog new tricks.

This 1983 911 SC IROC tribute by @9r1bb1t absolutely blew my socks off to drive. The car is stripped down, made track-ready, and LOUD! (Anyone got earplugs?)

Lovingly dubbed Kermit on account of its green skin, this car is both tricky and rewarding to drive. After 180k miles, the 915 transmission fights you unless you hit the shift timing just right, but the engine still spins smoothly after 43 years on the road.

The track prepped suspension is a highlight, giving this 911 SC one of the best noses I've experienced on a classic 911. It pairs oh so well with the talkative steering.

Rare force-fed air, the 2008 911 GT2. (Be sure to check out the last photo!)

I've been thinking all week about my drive in this 911 GT2. Thanks to the turbocharged engine, the GT2 is equal parts irresponsibly fast and yet more exploitable than a 997 GT3. And the GT2 still has the lovely steering and chassis feedback that I adore from 997s.

I'd love to build my leg strength (the clutch is HEAVY) and daily drive one of these.

Blue jeans interior 911 Carrera 2.7 RS? 🤯

I spotted this after an early dinner in Carmel by the Sea and couldn't stop clicking photos. The colors and details on this 2.7 RS are incredible. If only I'd seen @sean_wotherspoon walking away from his masterpiece; I hope he was dressed to match!

I love this car as the ultimate answer to the Porches rare shades top-trumps game. What spec is your 911? Me? I've got the rainbow. 🌈😎 taken in Carmel by the Sea by @mikessteeringcolumn

A little fun and frivolous joy is just what I need these days and the Mini Cooper S convertible brings it. It's got gimmicks and Easter eggs up the wazoo, which is great as they give me 100 reasons to smile.

Cute curves: smile
Rainbow stitching: smile
Flag roof: smile
Spunky dynamics: smile

Yep, for open-air feel-good fun, the Cooper S convertible is the ticket!

I expected to love the Mazda CX-50. With great styling, an upmarket interior, and driving dynamics from legendary Mazda - the enthusiast's brand from Japan - the CX-50 was destined to be my compact SUV of choice.

I had four long days with the CX-50. The more I drove it, the more I thought, "nah, not for me."

The biggest deal breaker was the infotainment system, which looked like a poor impersonation of a 2011 BMW iDrive. Scrolling through lists of grayscale menu options is not how I want to interact with my car or phone.

The CX-50 almost hit driving fun, but just missed. The steering was fantastic, communicating at levels that would be fit for a Porsche. The chassis was decent, too, able to could clobber a cloverleaf on demand. But the naturally-aspirated 2.5L I4 engine and automatic transmission lacked the verve to put the Sport into this SUV.

Maybe the CX-50 will be great with a technology refresh and turbocharged engine. Or maybe it's just not for me.
