On August 19, 2006, our sweet baby Ariel was born and our lives and hearts were forever changed. The first day Michael and I met her, she was playing in the yard with her brothers and sisters and ran up to us full of love and energy. We knew that day she had picked us to be her Dads and we couldn’t help but fall in love with her. She was the only puppy with a reddish color. Since she was now our little Princess, we decided on the name Ariel.

Within the past 17 years, she lived in many apartments, took many trips, stayed in hotels, was part of many celebrations, and has been there for Michael and I in every chapter of our lives. From new jobs, our new home, loss of loved ones, sickness, marriage, welcoming new family members, she was there to love and support us along the way with her charming personality.

She has shown us unconditional love and brings a smile to our faces everyday. From the different ways she would wake both of us up in the mornings, to the constant kisses and wanting to cuddle in our arms, being Michael Ray’s shadow, the way she always knew when her Dad was watching something on tv that is about to make him cry and would rush up next to me to comfort me. She has always been our baby, best friend, and it’s been pure joy seeing her beautiful face everyday.

Friday night we laid in bed with our sweet baby girl until the early hours of the morning. We talked about how much we loved her, how lucky we were to be her Dads, about all the things we did together as a family, all the trips we took together, and about all the people she loved along the way. She took her last breath with her daddies by her side, where she felt the most safe and loved. This is one of the hardest things in life we had to go through and our hearts are broken, but we are blessed we got to be her dads! Although it may seem like we spoiled her, there was so much more she gave to us. The San Antonio LGBTQ+ Advisory Board invites you to our October meeting.

We are excited to welcome Melissa Gohlke, UTSA Special Collections Assistant Archivist and scholar of LGBTQ history, for a special presentation highlighting our San Antonio LGBTQ+ history and the importance of preserving the stories that helped shape San Antonio. Following our board meeting guest will have an opportunity to view items from San Antonio’s LGBTQ archival collections, connect with fellow community members, and enjoy refreshments.

We are honored to celebrate the approval of the Erica Andrews Memorial Street Designation.

Erica Andrews left an unforgettable mark on San Antonio through her artistry, mentorship, leadership, and the way she opened doors for so many in our community. Her influence continues to be felt today, and this recognition helps ensure future generations will know her name and her story.

We are grateful to Lyn-Z Andrews, Taryn Taylor, Sofia Sepulveda and the city leaders who worked to make this tribute possible. Moments like this remind us that our LGBTQ+ history belongs in the story of San Antonio. May Erica’s name, impact, and legacy continue to shine for generations to come.
