Six photographs from the Andrew, Matthew and Ruti exhibition currently on at the CCA in Tel Aviv @ccatelavivyafo The exhibition, curated by Hila Cohen Schneiderman and @tamarimar is a tribute the video archive of the CCA. Young artists were invited to watch videos from the thousands in the archive, select something that appealed to them about the archive and produce a work. This photo has two works: wall works by Liam Chambon and a sculpture by Adir Cohen. In this image I will just discuss the wall work and in the next the sculpture. 1. Liam Chambon @sunshinechambon “Boys will be boys” (digital knitting - the images are knitted as opposed to painted) In this work, the artist had watched archival film produced by Palestinians in the West Bank made with video cameras provided to them by the Israeli human rights organisation @btselem of abuses of power by Israeli soldiers. The artist found the footage difficult to watch. For the work he focused on certain images - for example a blown up single word of a subtitle or a blurry image as a result of the camera being turned towards the sun, froze the image and had then produced by computerised knitting in who each digital pixel is rendered as a physical thread. This caption is both for the sculpture here and the sculpture on the previous page. Both are by Adir Cohen @aadircohen The work on this page: the artist collected slender planks of wood from dumpsters, workshops, old houses etc. Many of them had nails in them, traces of concrete, sand plaster or other debris. He painted each plank in a gradient colour from blue to brown representing sky, sea, sand, earth and ground. Each plank is viewed as a separate landscape but when all the planks are combined you get what he refers to as a landscape painting. The gaps between the planks are deliberate because the brain fills in the missing gaps. The complete work also includes the sculpture on the previous page and a sound work that can’t be seen in these images but I will explain. The sculpture on previous page are like two deck chairs - abandoned by lovers. The shape for them is evocative of a wave. Together we have a scene from Tel Aviv beach. Nineteen photographs from the Renoir and Love exhibition at the National Gallery in London. Captions are directly from the museum placards. Left Dance in the Country 1883 Renoir’s lover and future wife, Aline Charigot, posed for the woman who beams at the viewer while his old friend Paul Lhote played the role of her attentive partner. The Dance pictures earned the artist acclaim. The respected critic Gustave Geffroy declared Renoir one of ‘the most sincere and personal historians of our modern life.’ Oil on canvas MusĂ©e d’Orsay, Paris Right Dance at Bougival 1883 8 A man in a boater’s straw hat pulls his partner close and appears to be moving in for a kiss. In keeping with courtship etiquette of the time, she demurely turns her face away. On the packed earth of an outdoor dancefloor, Renoir notes cigarette butts, matches and a posy of violets, while behind the couple, in a blurred technique suggesting the vertiginous speed of their waltz, other young people chat, flirt and drink beer. Oil on canvas Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, #renoir #renoirandlove #nationalgallery #museumoffinearts #museedorsay The Skiff (La Yole) 1875 Renoir contrasts the complementary (mutually enhancing) colours of blue and orange to dazzling effect in capturing sunlight on water. The steam train making its way towards the railway bridge and the house on the far bank all insist that this is a modern, suburban landscape. The two women in the rowing skiff may also hint at a romantic encounter. As Guy de Maupassant’s short story Paul’s Mistress (1881) recorded, boating resorts on the Seine were popular for same-sex as well as heterosexual liaisons. Oil on canvas The National Gallery, London. Self Portrait about 1875 Renoir’s emaciated features, rendered with agitated brushwork, convey a nervous temperament that stands in stark contrast to the smiling, carefree figures he took such care to depict. A close friend described him as a man ‘with a hurried gait, a serious expression and a distracted air.’ The artist’s strenuous commitment to painting often left him exhausted. ‘From time to time, one must attempt things beyond one’s strength, ‘ he stated. Ella Fleck @fleels on the Ehrlich Steinberg stand @ehrlichsteinberg at Frieze. ⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ This stand - in my opinion - was not only the stand out stand in the Focus section of Frieze for emerging galleries and deserved winner of the Camden Arts Center @camdenartcentre award giving the artist her first institutional show in the UK next year, but was, for me, the stand out show of the whole Frieze fair. All credit to the London based artist for the work and the LA based gallery for showing it. Ella Fleck, a young graduate of Goldsmiths, taught in part by the great Andrew Renton, @andrew.renton worked under cover, pretending to be a man called Elliot who himself was pretending to be, to unsuspecting male customers, an Only Fans model called Aria. The way Only Fans work is that typically male customers pay online women to chat - and that chat is often explicit. The customers pay more for photographs etc. The most popular models have so many men who want to chat to them that they outsource the chatting to an agency who recruit “Chatters” who pretend to be the model to chat to the customer. In order to be a chatter one has to go through a lengthy training programme - unpaid - where the trainees are taught what to say to the customers to ensure the customer does not suspect they are not actually talking to the model - when they are actually talking to the chatter - who could be - and often are - male. The trainees are also taught their job is not so much to chat but to extract money from the customer by charging them for photographs and so on. There is therefore a lot of deceit going on at all levels. Ella went through the training programme. The three video screens are simulations of the training programme with the trainer commenting on responses by the trainee, telling them not to use so many emojis and so on. Each chatter might be engaged in a few different conversations at the same time and must recall pertinent facts about the person to whom they are chatting. They must also know the facts of the model they are pretending to be. And all the while as the clock ticks, the money generated by the model’s chatters ticks up. I loved it! Congratulations @fleels by @mikeyezra

To avoid wasting cow’s milk - a precious, valuable resource - for his own artistic output, Middleton found casein in a material that sits outside of industrial production: human milk. Each work increases in size at an implied exponential rate; their surface area is a direct representation of the different quantities of human milk consumed by an infant over one hour, one day and two days. Containing and delineating the temporalities of breastfeeding, human milk ‘clocks in’ and ‘clocks out. The three pigments - smalt, cadmium vermillion, lead antimonate - which ‘contaminate’ the casein, are tied up with violent histories of extraction and colonial expansion (from their use in weapon construction to their extraction through illegal mining). While coded as blank, ‘pure forms of expression, embodied (female) and mechanized labours are mapped across forms of production tied up in economies of value and waste that call into question the ethical frameworks of painting itself.” Via Carlos Ishikawa @carlos_ishikawa #stuartmiddleton Sunil Gupta @sunilgupta7402 Untitled From the series Christopher Street, 1976/2026 Archival inkjet prints 91.4 × 61 cm Framed: 93.8 × 65.8 × 3.2 cm, Editions of 5 plus 1 artist’s proof Via Hales @halesgallery # by @mikeyezra
