The Tuft-legged Orbweaver! What a good looking spider.

Last Sunday, during my park marathon, I approached the end of a forest path on the property line of Glacier Ridge Metro Park and I was dumped into a grassy field. The path split in two directions and I meandered north. This was prime tick territory and I was not prepared to wade through high grasses. I came to a section that was not clearly marked and I started losing steam. I decided to turn back and check out the leg of the field trail that went in the other direction. Thank goodness that I did! I found a few wonderful things on that small stretch of transition between grassy fields and forest. This orbweaver had its web strung between two low trees. I had a difficult time getting this shot. It was at just that height where I was having a hard time keeping my body square to the subject, staying still, and using my other hand to block the sun. In the end I am pleased with the result! :)

Sylvan Jumping Spider - giant dump of pictures. These are the reject photos from a series I took in April. Although I am not great at editing, I was terrible in April. A lot of these shots ended up looking better than the 'good' shots I posted many months ago. I hope you enjoy them.

A spider (Eustala sp.) having a snack of a firefly. This probably isn't a set best viewed on a phone, but I like it anyways.

When I was staying in a cabin with my family I went out in the evening just to see what the area was like. I found this spider in a web, but decided to go back inside before getting many pictures. In the morning there was a heavy rain. I put on my rain jacket and headed out. Luckily my camera is weather sealed. The web was deeply nestled in between a bush and landscaping. I didn't want to mash anything so I contorted my body and snapped a few pictures.

A Spined Micrathena carefully building a web. Which is your favorite?

The natural light here was perfect. A beam of sun shined down as a spotlight right on the web. However, I wanted to catch the beautiful spider as well, so I shot with flash to highlight the spider which would have been in shadow. These spiders are VERY difficult to take single shots of because their interesting features are on more than one plane and generally you need to compromise. However, these shots just worked. I watched the web being built for 15 minutes or so. Much of the time I was just watching and not trying to photograph anything. What a treat!

Another Emerald Jumping Spider! I run into these pretty often and do not get sick of them. Check out that beautiful, rich back pattern. The iridescence as they move, flashing green as the little scales catch the light. It is just splendid.

This set is from June. I'm trying to clean up my files. There will probably be a bunch of stories coming up of subjects that are neat, but I don't feel like making full posts.

Harvestmen and Honey Bee! Make sure to read the description for the last two pictures.

Daddy long legs are easily overlooked by me. I sometimes see 100 or more in a day just perched in a leaf or on the ground. Often they seem to aimlessly wander. However, a few times a year I have encounters with them that remind me how cool they can be.

I don't know how this daddy long legs came across this bee, but it was enjoying testing out little nibbles all over.

[p1] sampling the mouth-parts. Is that the stinger lodged in the harvestmen's abdomen? Who knows!
[p2] A few minutes later it decided to check out the stinger.
[p3] Turns out it wanted to nibble the feet too
[p4] back to the... uh, butt
[p5,6] This is where it gets wild. The harvestmen locked their pedipalps (the little mouth arms) onto the proboscis (tongue) of the bee and lifts. At first it was just dragging it in little bursts, but eventually it picked the bee fully up and disappeared deeper into the tree! The last picture is blurry, but pretend it is because the daddy long legs was zoomin'. (he wasn't)

What a cool sighting! I have another experience that I had with daddy long legs this week, but I might have to hold off on it. Don't want to over-saturate the dad content.

The Arrowhead Orbweaver!

I've seen a bunch of these, but NEVER with this wonderful coloration. It is clear where this spider gets their name. The red detailing on the white fantastic. The cracked paint look on the sides of the abdomen is also perfect. Finally, this individual was probably 10 times larger than the ones I saw a few weeks ago. Shes a unit!

More Green Stink Bugs! Just a little later in life than the hatchlings I posted a few posts ago. I'm almost caught up with iNaturalist observations. I did crops and light edits for 50 subjects (maybe 70-80 pics) today after work. These two are from that work. I have a few cool subjects, but I want to spend a bit more time on them.

Some Owlet Moths munching away on leaves. There were 100s spread across a small area of leaves and former leaves. They were making quick work and could likely defoliate a section of a tree in a day.

This was on the property of a cabin my family rented for the weekend. There was a lot of variety on the grounds and it would be fun to go back to see the changes over time.
