I actually wanted to post photos of the VIPER VAMPIRES vinyl records today. Unfortunately, half the shipment has been stuck with UPS for two days, and the delivery date was pushed back again today. What a bunch of jerks!! šŸ–• For the past few weeks, Iā€™ve been keeping myself occupiedā€”and reasonably entertained, given the circumstancesā€”with a new toy: my Seestar smart telescope. Iā€™m learning, step by step, how to capture the kind of impressive astrophotography often shared by more experienced amateur astronomers in various astronomy groups. Recently, I pointed the device at M31 and M45 again and gave them more exposure timeā€”this time without a light pollution (LP) filter. I hadnā€™t realized at first that both of these objects actually show up betterā€”even amidst urban light pollutionā€”when you leave the filter off. Now, Iā€™m finally getting the colors that were missing before, and the level of detail keeps increasing with more exposure time (just compare the old images to the new ones). Iā€™ll definitely be returning to these two targets again! šŸ˜ŽšŸ” #adastraperaspera #adastra #VIPERVAMPIRES by @mikeyorkprojects

Okay, the VIPER VAMPIRES records should arrive from the pressing plant next week. As soon as I have them and everything is in order, Iā€™ll set up the pre-order. Iā€™ve been passing the waiting time with my new smart telescope. Here are my favorite shots from the last few weeks. #adastraperaspera #adastra #VIPERVAMPIRES by @mikeyorkprojects

āœØSince the moon was very bright all week and I didnā€™t feel like waiting for the sky to get dark again (though it was mostly cloudy anyway), I simply took the opportunity to image some very bright objects. Visible here are the planet Jupiter and the bright stars Capella and Procyon. Since I was trying out a diffraction spike mask for the first time, the spikes unfortunately obscureā€”at exactly the ā€žwrongā€œ angleā€”Jupiterā€™s moons, which were actually beautifully aligned. #adastraperaspera #adastra #clearsky by @mikeyorkprojects

Since the moon was very bright all week and I didn't feel like waiting for the sky to get dark again (though it was mostly cloudy anyway), I went ahead and tested the setup's capabilities under challenging conditionsā€”meaning short exposure times and high light pollution. I have to say, itā€™s a real challenge for a beginner to get a presentable result out of the images. Iā€™m looking forward to clear nights! The first image is a processed version; the second shows a version straight from the telescope app. What you see is a small section of IC 1805, the "Heart Nebula." #adastraperaspera #adastra #clearsky by @mikeyorkprojects

āœØšŸ” I finally got around to processing more pictures from last week. Image 1: NGC 6992 (or the Xenomorph Nebula, as I like to call it šŸ˜Ž) was taken right next to the very bright moon and the brightly lit street. I just wanted to see what the smart telescope was capable of capturing. Amazing! Image 2: M 81 (Rode's Galaxy) + M 82 (Cigar Galaxy). Here, I waited for the second half of the night, until the moon had set again. I didn't want to risk exposing for hours only to end up with a poor result. Image 3: C 14, Double Star Cluster. With such bright stars, I didn't necessarily need to pay attention to the moon. Star clusters like these were among the first things that fascinated me with my telescopes for visual observation. I find it incredibly cool how many stars my smart telescope is now capturing that I couldn't see before! I'm also learning how to get better results with AstroWizard and need to use Affinity less. šŸ–– #adastra #adastraperaspera #seestar #S50Pro by @mikeyorkprojects

āœØšŸ” This week, despite bright moonlight, I took advantage of a gap in the clouds to image AE Aurigaeā€”the Flaming Star Nebula. Here are three different versions, each highlighting different aspects. My new night-time toy is really fun! āœØšŸ” Okay, Iā€™m just starting to learn how to handle deep-sky images. Itā€™s a WHOLE different world compared to the image processing Iā€™m used to. Iā€™m sure Iā€™ll get better with time. If the skies had been clearer, I certainly would have had less noise and wouldn't have needed to make the background quite so dark. But considering the lighting conditions, I think it turned out pretty well for my second deep-sky image. Itā€™s amazing what that little thing captures! šŸ˜ŽšŸ” M 45 ā€“ Pleiades StackingWizard BETA + AstroWizard + Affinity 95/95 frames 1.6 hours of photons Bortle 7-8 #adastra #adastraperaspera #seestar #S50Pro #m45 #plejades by @mikeyorkprojects

āļøšŸ” A photo from last night, stacked within the app, without any further post processing. Itā€™s amazing what the telescope can see, considering there was very little time between the clouds and I live in an area with the second-worst level of light pollution. šŸ˜µā€šŸ’« #adastrašŸš€ #adastraperasperašŸ–– by @mikeyorkprojects

šŸ” Fi-na-lly, a starry night. At least itā€™s supposed to be partly clear tonight, and I can FINALLY try out my new smart telescope. For the sake of simplicity, Iā€™m starting my test run with the target every beginner looks at first: the Andromeda Galaxy. After 32 minutes of 60-second exposures, I discovered that when satellites fly through the frame, they leave behind some pretty intense streaks. Now Iā€™ve dropped down to 20-second exposures and am letting it keep runningā€”provided no clouds roll in and the galaxy stays within the field of view... šŸ––#adastraperaspera #andromeda #seestar by @mikeyorkprojects
