Aurora Australis danced like nobody (or everybody) was watching the other night after the CME accompanying a X1.9 solar flare directly impacted Earth, with a solar wind speed of over 1100km/s. Photos taken 20/1/2026, 21:50 - 01:30 AEDT on a 14mm lens. Unfortunately the initial shock arrived late morning, maybe 8 hours ahead of the forecast I had seen, with an erratic Bz. Then on the way to the coast, unexpected train shenanigans adding another 90mins to a 2hr trip. I was tempted to give up the chase but I'm glad I stuck it out. She was there immediately after dark and there was another peak around 22:30-22:50. This was the first time I've seen clear naked-eye beams. Shared the moment with a small crowd that gathered on the lookout platform I had parked myself on just after sunset. Then wandered back along the path down from the bluff and eventually packed it in around 01:30 during a lull in activity, though apparently it picked up again and lasted all night. Aurora Australis over the Bass Strait horizon, with a rocky clifftop and breaking waves in the foreground. Auroral forms include green arcs, diffuse purple/magenta and beams dancing above. taken in Barwon Heads by @mikeyoung_au

11/10/24 - The CME shock around 3:20am was clouded out here, but the sky cleared for a bit around 4am before heavier cloud started to reappear around 5am. Mix of Canon 24-105mm f/4 and Samyang 14mm f/2.8. Not bad for the middle of light-polluted suburbia. --- #aurora #auroraaustralis #auroraaustralisvictoria #melbourne #victoria #spaceweather #nightsky #magnetosphere #solarwind #cme by @mikeyoung_au

Took a walk under the full moon at the perfectly reasonable hour of 10pm and stayed out till 3:30am. The night before a flight. Good decisions - who needs them? 19/8 .. #fullmoon #tasmania #huonvalley #nightsky #starrynight #night Yachts on the water with rocks in the foreground and a dark blue starry sky overhead. taken in Cygnet, Tasmania by @mikeyoung_au

One night in Anglesea, courtesy of AR3664. During the G5 geomagnetic storm on May 11th 2024, with the beach almost entirely to myself. Thanks to the family with the kid running near my camera for making me look up and see the show with my own eyes when it was at its peak. Minor edits for noise, exposure and clarity. Exposures ranging from 30s down to 1s, ISO between 1600 and 25600. -- #aurora #auroraaustralis #auroraaustralisvictoria #spaceweather #magnetosphere #solarwind Long exposure of Aurora Australis shining green and magenta over Bass Strait looking south from Anglesea, with Point Roadknight on the horizon.
