Ten years ago, my daughter Laila was maybe 5 or 6 years old, dancing in a NYC subway station to a man with a bucket and a voice that stopped time. 🎶

His name was @mikeyung — and we would catch him at Delancey & Essex, sometimes 23rd & 6th, and every single time, Laila lit up like Christmas morning.

We supported him for years. Through kindergarten, through middle school, through some of the hardest seasons of our lives. There were nights she would take my iPhone, put one of his songs on repeat, tuck it under her pillow, and fall asleep listening to him sing Unchained Melody — because his voice made her feel safe when everything else felt uncertain.

I remember a time I had nothing in my pocket, nothing in my account — and I still needed to give him something. So I took a stainless steel chain with a cross off my own neck and put it on his. That’s all I had. But what he gave us was worth so much more.

I told him once, “I saw Tyrese shout you out.” And he said, “Yeah… I just wish something would happen.”

Mike — something happened. 🏆

Watching you win an Oscar for Singers last week, I just sat there with tears in my eyes thinking about that little girl dancing to your music in the subway. She grew up with your voice in her ears. And now the whole world knows what we knew all along.

You were always a star. New York just knew it first. 🗽🖤

To be a part of something this special is a feeling I can’t even fully put into words. Being involved in @thesingersfilm and watching it reach this level — winning an Oscar — is truly a blessing.

Big love and endless gratitude to @samdavis Davis for the vision, the passion, and for bringing something so powerful to life. And to every single person who poured their heart into this film… this moment belongs to all of us.

Thank you to @netflix for believing in the story and helping share it with the world.

Moments like this remind me why we do it. Proud. Grateful. Honored. by @mikeyung
