WHAT THE BLOOD KNOWS

People make decisions for me and call it care. “I didn’t want to put more on you.” “I just wanted to respect what you’re going through.” I know it usually comes from a good place. But even love, when it decides for me instead of with me, can leave me out of my own life. I don’t need to be shielded from my own choices. I need to be trusted with them. The same way I need to be believed when I say I’m in pain.

And I have support. Family, friends, people who show up for me and I don’t take that for granted. But there’s a version of this disease that no one else is in the room for. The hospital bed at 2am. The moment right before they finally give you something for the pain. The quiet after everyone’s gone home and it’s just me and my body, negotiating. No one can sit in that chair for me. No one can carry that part.

And right now, I’m pregnant. My body is doing the most demanding work it has ever done, building a WHOLE HUMAN life, while managing a blood disorder that never fully steps aside. Two battles, same body, and some of it I face completely alone.

BENEATH THE VEIL

I live with sickle cell beta thalassemia. I’ve sat in emergency rooms in the middle of a pain crisis and watched doctors hesitate to believe me because I don’t “look” sick enough. Because pain in a Black woman’s body is so often questioned before it’s treated. I’ve had to advocate for my own care while in the worst pain of my life, explaining a disease I didn’t choose to people who are supposed to already understand it.

You don’t see any of that when you look at me. You see a woman who seems fine. That’s the part nobody talks about. How much of this disease lives in silence, in symptoms nobody can see, in believing me being the first hurdle before the treatment even starts.
