While working in an animal laboratory, I changed the cages on different racks depending on the day of the week.

The rats were all different. Some had no particular abnormalities, while others had hind leg disabilities or missing tails. Each had its own characteristics and required slightly different care when being moved.

Rats with hind leg disabilities or missing tails had to be handled carefully. But sometimes they would suddenly leap up like popcorn, making my already sensitive nature even more sensitive.

Looking back, there was so much that made each rat different that it felt strange to group them all together simply as rats. by @miks.image

I met a fellow writer while working in an animal laboratory

We talked about our work
the routines of making a living
and mice

Just the kind of half-formed thoughts that come up
when talking about how our perception of mice has changed over time

As we kept talking
I remembered a story my dad born in 1956 used to tell me

When he was in elementary school
there was a public campaign to catch mice for hygiene reasons
and bringing in a mouse’s tail was part of the homework

When he couldn’t catch one
he and my aunt rubbed a dried squid leg against the floor until it snapped off
and brought that instead

I can’t really put the mice from that time
and the laboratory mice we work with now on the same line

but stories like this make me see mice in many different ways

The repetitive routines of making a living
and the subject I keep finding myself looking at along the way

Sometimes I wonder
where the things I make will eventually lead by @miks.image

I ended up working closer to animals after growing tired of many different kinds of work. Maybe I had simply become a little tired of dealing with people.

For about 485 days, I spent my time around laboratory mice, and earlier this year, I began shaping those hours with my hands.

One of my first goals was to make enough mouse sculptures to fill an entire bathtub. The number of mice I had actually encountered was far greater than that.

As I kept making them, I sometimes stopped seeing numbers and began seeing forms instead. At times, they felt less like mice and more like small toys.

For the rest of the year, I want to make a mobile too, and keep going a little more playfully, with less effort and pressure—finding a way to leave behind what I have seen without making it feel too heavy. by @miks.image

One of the reasons I paint mice is because I don’t want the time I spent in the animal laboratory to remain as something discarded.

I have gone through many different paths. Before working in the laboratory, I taught children at an art academy and prepared for a career at a design company while studying in graduate school. After several changes in direction, I eventually found myself returning to the animal laboratory.

The laboratory is a peculiar space. The thoughts that accumulate within it can easily lean toward darker places, yet I have always been drawn to bright and innocent forms.

I created this clover-shaped mouse because I wanted to preserve both of these sensations. By placing the familiar and optimistic image of a clover alongside a laboratory mouse, I did not want to record my past only as something dark or tragic.

This piece is not simply a symbol of good luck. It is more like a record of the forms I discovered within a repetitive environment that gradually numbed me, and of bringing back the time that seemed to have passed by through my work.

Even the moments that once seemed abandoned eventually become a part of my art. by @miks.image

*Zhwi Zhwi of Abundance

Borrowing the form of the Venus figure, this work reimagines laboratory mice as beings that have nurtured humanity.

Many advances in medicine and science have been built upon the sacrifice of countless laboratory animals. This work was made to remember those unnamed lives. by @miks.image
