Tell me where are we going?
Mom told me
“I taped the soles to my shoes
until my feet touched the kabuli streets”
And baba slowly reveals stories about an aunt I will never meet
A sister lost while it was raining bombs outside
I sense his wounds have not yet turned into scars

But my memories are thick with nostalgia
With honey lips and rosy cheeks
Bright colours in the bazaar
Running through wheat fields
and climbing in trees for sweet mulberries

Somewhere along the road Soumaya had become Samira
And now I realize that, like those differing childhoods
They are simply two sides of the same coin
