As a child, I used to runup to people on the street and scream out with joy 'its my birthday, it's my birthday'... sing birthday songs to myself at the top of my lungs.

All I wished for myself this year, is to be again as carefree as I was as a child.

THE PULSE OF A MIGRANT
A second world, a third me... perpetually caught between the four cardinal directions of our globe.

Endlessly broken heart.
Have I been like this from the start?
Why some people stay and feel they belong,
yet I always chase another song?

Chronically shredded heart -
I stand again to say farewell,
to enter another realm, to live in the parallel.
A second world, a third me...
Always imagining what could be.

I might have been.
I should have seen.
I would have... -
caught inbetween.

So many versions of me.
Who I am ain't who I was.
Sometimes, don't know who to be.

I do know how to blend,
yet too many roots to mend.
My wings flutter without stop.
Am the same, yet not.

Whenever I arrive in Africa, my system needs a few days. Just to cope. To adjust to this different world. To process the noise, the chaos… the sensory overload. It doesn't just take two or three days - it takes proper time until I've adapted. And then, usually, the moment of departure is already around the corner....

Letztens stand ich früh morgens in meiner viel zu kleinen, viel zu roten Küche und griff nach meiner silbernen Illy-Kaffeedose. Wie eigentlich jeden Morgen.

In der Dose ist längst gar kein Illy Kaffee mehr, sondern von mir selbst gemahlene Kaffeebohnen aus der lokalen Rösterei. Die Dose habe ich bereits beinahe 20 Jahre.

Als ich die Dose aufschraubte, musste ich plötzlich lächeln - ich fühlte mich ertappt...

The other morning, I was standing in my far too small, far too red kitchen, reaching for my silver Illy coffee tin. Like pretty much every morning.

There is no longer any Illy coffee inside, instead, it holds beans I grind myself from the local roastery in my town. I’ve had this tin for almost twenty years now.

As I unscrewed the lid, I suddenly had to smile - I felt caught....

Since my earliest childhood books to me were never just an accumulation of words. Not just boring sentences sewn together that I was obliged to read for a school assignment or something like that.

Books were worlds that I could submerge in. Hide under. Dive into.

Four weeks in Germany are behind me.
Usually only back in the country I grew up in for short stints - this time it was different. A. Ice and interesting rein check.
And I left with mixed feelings. Some days I thought, this place is so great. Other days, I was reminded why I chose to leave....
