September in #Milan means #FashionWeek. This week at KHAMSA, we’re seeing the city through a different lens.

Instead of the usual Fashion Week guide, we handed the reins to @milanpyramid for a real, lived-in look at the city she calls home, beyond the front rows, showrooms and schedules.

Born in Egypt and raised in Milan, Aya sits at the intersection of fashion, heritage and self-expression. Since launching her platform in 2017, she’s become one of the distinctive voices in Italian fashion, championing a more inclusive industry along the way.

Venice Film Festival 83 just started, but I wanted to take a moment to recap some of my favorite memories from the past four years.

I have to be honest: never in my life did I think that one day I would be walking this red carpet, especially as a veiled woman and daughter of immigrants. I’m incredibly proud of my background, and even prouder of my religion. That’s why I choose, every day, to show up as my authentic self, even when it isn’t always the easiest thing to do.

I remember the first time feeling like I was living in a fever dream. I was dressed in a full @maisonvalentino gown and wearing @cartier jewelry to attend the premiere of an incredible film. I remember wanting to call my grandma because I knew how proud she would have been of me.

That first year also taught me how much work moments like these require, and how many people have to believe in you to make them possible.

The second year, I was incredibly anxious. I don’t even remember exactly why, but having a friend like @francesca_binda there to share it with made it easier. I think that’s also the year I started getting more into cinema. I was building my own culture, curiosity and relationship with film.

The third year, I felt confident. @salvatore_vignola had custom-made a gorgeous look for me, and I had landed in Venice that same day after giving my first TED Talk the night before. @camillatome and I cried so much. I genuinely couldn’t have made it without her.

And last year was the most fun of all. I wasn’t anxious. I wasn’t overthinking it. I was simply happy to be there and enjoying every second.

What a blessing it is to be chosen by the people around you because of who you are, and not because you are a token that ticks a “diversity requirement.”

None of this would have been possible without the incredible team at @cartier , who believed in me through and through. Four years, four very different versions of me, and so many people to be grateful for.

(VFF is about cinema, the films, the directors, writers, actors, producers, and of course, all the people behind the stories. The fashion, the red carpets and the people who attend them are only a small part of a much bigger world.) taken in Venezia, Italia by @milanpyramid

What do you do when you realize your grandmother does not understand the language you speak to your friends? Who are you when you walk through the streets of your fathers childhood and you don’t recognize them? Where do you belong to when home tastes like your mothers cooking and the smell of her kitchen rather than an address on a map? As children of diaspora we grow up digging into the ground in search of that place.

On the Homeward issue @milanpyramid speaks with Iraqi-British writer and editor @dalia.aldu about diaspora, belonging and the complicated idea of home.

From her first book, “Babylon, Albion”, to her roving library and research project @hikmairaq , documenting Iraqi cultural and visual heritage, and her independent magazine @the.roadtonowhere focused on diaspora storytelling, Dalia explores what it means to inherit a homeland you may have never lived in, to preserve a culture through its archives, and to imagine identity beyond borders.

Eid Mubarak to everyone celebrating! Ramadan is over, and we’re finally back to breakfast at normal hours. Believe it or not, the kahk on the table is something I helped my mom make, and those katayef were made with so much love by her hands.

This is the moment we say goodbye to Ramadan until next year and welcome Eid al-Fitr 🌸 How do you celebrate Eid?

For me, the days leading up to it are always spent in the kitchen, helping prepare all the sweets, and then gathering together as a family.

This year, I chose to do it in a very Italian way with @ginori1735 and their new Florenza collection. Because just like we all want to look our best for Eid in new outfits, I wanted my table to look its best too with a collection that truly embraces the spring knocking at our doors. ✨
