Milan (38), a photojournalist from Croatia: “I am done being too much. I am done with this phone and the curse of always being available. I am done with fake news, breaking news, and any news. I am done with being the right person at the wrong time. I am done with this crippling OCD. I am done with talking to everyone but with no one. I am done with never being good enough for myself. I am done with coming home to silence every night, and waking up in it. I am done with eating too much or too little. I am done with not being a better brother. I am done with the right, the center, and the left. I am done with missing goodnight and good morning texts. I am done with photography. I am done with being 38 and crying every week like I’m 14 again. I am done with being the silent one. I am done with waking up hungover and deleting my Instagram stories. I am done with presuming there’s value in tradition. I am done with heartbreak. I am done with a patriarchy that didn’t teach me respect for those who deserve it most. I am done with having to forget I cared. I am done with not being able to sleep. I am done with sleeping too much. I am done with photos of other people on my phone, the ones I can’t make myself delete. I am done with not having more time to read. I am done with not seeing the world. I am done with not being a better son. I am done with reading the lyrics of every song you share to see if it’s about me. I am done with sleeping on the couch for weeks. I am done with hope. I am done with being left out. I am done with panic attacks. Mostly, I am done with loneliness. I am done with writing this.”

My Facebook feed is a carefully curated stream of human misery from the point of view of a select few. It just so happens that Marina Vujčić is one of those few, and for whatever reason, literary or otherwise, I don’t skip her posts. Here are some shots we did in 2021.

The algorithm is a reluctant historian. Six years later, it hands me back these photos of Vojko V. We shot them for some interview at my favorite underground club.

If you make music and want pictures worth resurfacing in 2032, get in touch. 🤍

I woke up in a bloody tent. My clothes, my underwear, my sleeping bag, all soaked in sweat mixed with blood. Pillow too. Every part of me hurt. I didn’t have the courage to look at the photos for two more days, the way you avoid checking your bank account after a bad weekend.

Backing up a day: First day of Brutal Assault, a festival I’ve been calling my vacation for 15 years now. For the first time though, my camera came with me. The camera was a Leica M11. A precision instrument designed in Wetzlar by people who have never once considered a mosh pit. It has no business being in one. I brought it into one anyway. Several, in fact, which is not what German engineers had in mind when they built it. I’m not sure they even know what a mosh pit is.

At some point I went down. This happens, you don’t plan it. On the way to the ground I made an executive decision: knees and elbows would take the impact, the camera would not. I would like to say this was strategy. It was closer to instinct, like a mother who grabs a child instead of her purse in a car crash. Somebody picked me up, ‘cause that’s the only rule that matters in the pit, if someone goes down, you pick them up.

Anyway, what’s life if not a series of stupid decisions, made with total confidence? The camera is fine. I’ll be fine. Brutal Assault was a blast, as always, in every sense of the word. I’ll be back next year for the 30th edition. Might even bring that Leica again.

Amenra has spent twenty-some years building a religion out of pain, and I’ve loved them just as long, the way you love something that understands grief better than you do. They built a whole church around it. I shot them from the crowd on a Leica M11 in black and white, because color would have been a lie.

There. I did it. I shot a triathlon on a manual-focusing 35mm lens. And with that out of the way, my vacation begins. For the next week, I’ll be headbanging somewhere in Central Europe to sounds one can only describe as unfriendly.

Before Fritz, there was just Elvis Bošnjak. Herscht 07769 photos are coming. Until then, proof that I’ve been doing this a while, and so has he.

Years ago I photographed Ana Uršula Najev. She is amazing and a little unhinged, in the best way, but so am I, so we found an old lady at the bazaar and asked to borrow her stand and her produce for the shoot. She said yes. 🍅 We made ridiculous pictures. My editor had opinions about this later. I did not care then and I do not care now.

Recently Ana sang Amy Winehouse songs at a concert, which I totally missed. I was somewhere else, probably doing something forgettable. This post is an apology. It comes with vegetables. 🧅

For many, it is with Nabucco that opera becomes an art form accessible to the broadest audiences.

Verdi composed Nabucco at just 28 years of age, and the work marked a true turning point in both his life and career. After the failure of his first two operas and a series of personal tragedies, the loss of his two children and his wife, the young Verdi fell into a profound personal and creative crisis. It was precisely then, on a commission from La Scala in Milan, that Nabucco was born, propelling him into the ranks of the greatest composers in operatic history.

In 1554, Marin Držić wrote a Vespa into one of his best-known comedies, Skup. So when the Croatian National Theatre in Split staged the play as part of the 72nd Split Summer Festival’s drama program, reimagined by director Paolo Magelli, Elle magazine took notice and wanted photos of actress Anđela Ramljak with her Italian co-star. Here you go. That joke is in there for those of you who read my captions.

Kokošinjac at Kocka. Somewhere, an actual henhouse is filing a complaint with its union rep. This one had no eggs, no straw, and no idea what a chicken even was anymore, just a room of people who’d evolved past feathers and gone straight to sequins. Chickens never saw this coming. The chickens are fine, by the way. They just weren’t invited.
