Meet James Krogzemis. 🌍 (Džeimss Krogzemis)

“I am a wanderer” (in Latvian - klaidonis) is how he introduced himself to everyone he met.

James Krogzemis (1925-2015) was a Latvian-born world traveler, geography professor, travel writer and painter who lived for twenty years on the barge “Klaidonis” in Paris.

For James, freedom meant living simply and not being weighed down by possessions.

James became my borrowed grandfather, and he is part of the story told in A Quest for Freedom Vol. 2. This year marks 100 years since his birth.

The book is a limited edition of 200 copies. Rewards include signed copies, original paintings by James and Diana, handmade porcelain ducks, and postcards. Every contribution goes directly toward making the book. Link in bio. 💙

🎉🎉🎉 I am very, very, VERY excited to announce that 📖 IT’S HERE!🎉🎉🎉

My very first photobook - A Quest for Freedom Vol. 2 is now available for pre-order.

LINK IN BIO or visit mildabooks.com

All I need now is your support for printing it!

It all started with a question I couldn’t let go of - What happened to Klaidonis, the barge my relative James called home in Paris in the 1970s?

Chasing the answer led me into his archive, into the world of his partner, Diana, and eventually to Doris - the artist who owns the barge today.

It’s a family story, a love story, and a meditation on whether a floating home can still hold you steady.

About the book:
📖 Limited first edition of 200 copies, screen-printed and clothbound
🇱🇻 Launching in Riga this December

THANK YOU SO MUCH FOR SUPPORTING AND SHARING! 🙏

After four years of working on our photobook "Motherland, far Beyond the Polar Circle" and embarking on this emotionally saturated journey to the Far North in Siberia on the railroad tracks of exile, we're excited to announce this Kickstarter campaign to make a book into the world! It's a deeply personal story but, at the same time, universal. We're nearly done with it and need an extra push to finish up production and post-production. We're trying to make it to £30,000! I can't believe we got to this point on almost no budget and how much we learned through the process of making and what it takes to make such a photo project into an object to the final stage. Thank you to everyone who has contributed or given some advice or encouragement in taking this step. So much love for you all!

Grāmata ir angļu un latviešu valodās! 🇱🇻🇬🇧

Video no pašiem pirmajiem grāmatas eksemplāriem, kurus iesēju ar rokām.

Meet the duck. 🦆💙

While working on this book, I wanted to create a small keepsake from the project, and another way for you to support it.

Growing up, my constant symbol of freedom was a bird. It kept returning in my dreams. I’ve always dreamed of flying, or of lifting off the ground to see the world from above.

A bird is also a recurring element in the book, so I wanted to make something special.

The story of the classic rubber duck began as a heavy, hard-rubber novelty in the late 19th century, and Peter Ganine’s 1949 patent shaped the floating duck we know today. Artists have been reinventing it ever since.

Together with artist Arta Kiršteine (happy birthday today, Arta! 🎂) and Guna Petrevica, we made our version: a solid duck in blue porcelain. 💙

It is one of the rewards for A Quest for Freedom Vol. 2, a limited edition of 200 copies. Every contribution goes directly toward making the book. Link in bio.

This is Klaidonis, the barge at the heart of “A Quest for Freedom” Vol.2. ⚓

James and Diana bought it in the Netherlands and named it Klaidonis, which means “wanderer” in Latvian. It became James’s home for twenty years, moored on the Seine in Paris near the Pont des Arts, and the starting point for summers spent cruising the rivers and canals of Western Europe.

While I started working on this book, I kept wondering: what happened to this barge that was once the symbol of freedom for James and Diana?

A Quest for Freedom Vol. 2 is a limited edition photobook of 200 copies. Every contribution goes directly toward making the book. Link in bio. 💙

To everyone who has already shared my photobook - “A Quest for Freedom” Vol. 2, and especially to those of you who have already pre-ordered - thank you! This book took a lot of time to become real and seeing it reach people means more than I can put into words. 🙌🏼

Psst - a few Early Bird copies are still available well below the regular price, so if you’ve been waiting - now is the moment. 👀

Lost Territories: Tracing Imperial Violence
FOTODOK x Sputnik Photos
EXHIBITION

@fotodok.nl presents Lost Territories: Tracing Imperial Violence, a group exhibition by @sputnikphotos , an internationally renowned collective of photographers based in Poland.

For nearly twenty years, Sputnik’s work has explored the social, cultural, and political transformations of the former Eastern Bloc, with a focus on East-Central Europe and Central Asia.

The exhibition also offers a further space for reflection on a curated selection of 30 photobooks that present a broader range of stories and artists connected to the theme, and an exhibition reading space with newly commissioned texts will allow the audience to engage more deeply with the context.

We are honored that two of our books, Dream is Wonderful, Yet Unclear by @mkapajeva , and
Motherland. Far Beyond the Polar Circle by @georgsavetisjans has been selected for this
event.

Exhibition with a reading space is open from November 26, 2025, to March 01, 2026
