Kekeletso Masemola is a native of Soweto, while my own roots lie in Daveyton. We first crossed paths in Pretoria during our student years, completely unaware of one another’s professions or the caliber of work we were individually capable of. Our connection was built on a shared circle of friends and an exchange of energies. Whenever our paths crossed in Johannesburg, the conversation inevitably turned towards collaboration. I found myself constantly telling him that we needed to create something for NU-BAM, long before I truly understood the depth of what that actually meant.

Months later, we finally sat down, and Kekeletso opened up about his journey. He detailed his transition from Pretoria to Johannesburg and the evolution of his sound. He spoke about his former band, Legacy, and the move to NU-BAM, a shift born out of a hunger for growth and the necessity of a fresh start. This resonated deeply with me as I’ve always lived by the mantra that “Lived Experiences Form New Memories.”

He describes the NU-BAM sound, in its simplest terms, as “Bounce Jazz.”

Our bond is further strengthened by the parallel stories of our upbringing. Kekeletso carries the weight and grit of a rough childhood in the township of Dobsonville, a sentiment I share deeply coming from the streets of Daveyton. We both understand the unique friction of township life, how it can be both challenging and the very thing that fuels our creative fire. It is that shared history, rooted in the soil of Soweto and the East Rand, that makes our creative alignment feel like destiny rather than a mere coincidence. taken in Johannesburg, South Africa by @mildtai
