We managed to find a proper mulloway last night. Have been chasing a big one for a number of years and it was pretty sweet to get it with the boys in tow. I’ve lost count of the number of sharks we have waded through while waiting for the one to turn up.

She ate a tailor head that I had sent out on the slide rod into a deep gutter beside the headland. It wasn’t as fast as the whalers that normally plague us and I could feel the head shakes vibrating up the line. Hopes were high, but you just never know.

At 141cm, they get bigger but you can’t replace the buzz of getting a new PB with sand between your toes. Cracking fish. Super stoked. Will remember last night forever.

We’re slowly working out the ins and outs of dam barra fishing. There’s no escaping the grind punching out cast after cast in the never ending search for the bite. But hot off the heels of success we are pumped and grinning.

Dad’s fish came four hours into Saturday morning. He was tiring and had been sitting down for a rest. He changed lures, stood up and fired off a cast into an area I’d been working for a while. I watched his line zip sideways and heard a grunt as he sunk the hooks before 91cm of silver bullet shot skyward. Despite marking fish consistently all day, we ground out the rest of the day and night for zip.

My alarm chimed at 4.30am and we begrudgingly rolled out of bed. Fired way up the back of the dam in the dark and worked a couple of bays before returning to the same point as the day before. In exactly the same spot, my lure got slurped on a slow roll down deep between some lilly pads and a tree. The surprise of the bite and then the acrobatic jumps is difficult to explain after 17 hours of fishless casts. At 98cm she’s a personal best to date and stoked is an understatement. If you look closely, you’ll see she was blind in one eye. Didn’t seem to affect her too much and she swam off giving me a face full of water on the release.

I got towelled up on the trout this time. Didn’t seem to matter what i did, they were only interested in the one Pontoon Crack Jack. And there was no way Bill was going to relinquish it! 😂😂 taken in Lake Jindabyne by @miles.four.smiles

I managed to pull a new PB cod at 110cm from Copeton on the weekend with a little help from @buddygoodjigflies.

Stoked is an understatement.

The cod fly moves a heap of water and has an amazing lifelike action in the water. We had a few more eats that the boys just couldn’t quite convert.

Took Bill and two of his mates from school down to Copeton dam for the weekend to chase cod. The boys were all high spirits in the car on the way down.

First fish of the trip on the first morning was this solid 110cm that snarfed an @buddygoodjigflies cod fly as it dropped. Stoked is an understatement!

These jig flies need to be seen in the water to believe. They leave a boil on the surface when you move them they have that much body. But the movement of the fly can be so subtle as you tap or jiggle the tip.

I sat down and drove the electric and the scope for the rest of the trip and we had plenty of opportunities to get more but the boys just couldn’t quite convert.

The testicle fish, covered in slime, inhabits deep reef and can be found offshore from Stradbroke Island.

Went for a ride with @mattynix81 for a tub of slime balls today. Old school Bertram 25 has been given a new lease of life as an express. Beautiful boat.

I couldn’t sleep and the forecast was too good so launched the boat at 3am and toodled across the bay and out South Passage before there was much light. Don’t recommend that at all.

We were the first boat on the reef and had it to ourselves for an hour before another boat turned up. I was just about to give up when i saw the tip bounce as the laser pro got snipped off.

The other side then loaded up and the shotgun gave a bounce.

Thankfully one stuck and a 128cm wahoo joined us for the scenic tour of the Straddie Canyons that the rest of the day turned out to be.

Still no swords. I’m not giving up yet.

Our annual Kgari trip is done and dusted for the year. The weather was diabolical with 30kts of wind and scudding showers all week. We still managed to keep the kids occupied and entertained a stack of people swimming in the gutter at Waddy point by pulling a couple of sharks in to keep them on their toes 😂😂

$1.15 of hardbody lure munching mulloway from yesterday evening. Bill upped his PB by a fair margin and the by far the best one he has got on a lure. It was a skinny fish and i thought it was smaller than that when it hit the deck.

Safe to say the weather was wild! You had to lean into the wind to walk out the wall. 48kt gusts coming over the top of the wall from behind us and the rain was horizontal. The surf was up but we were tucked away in a nice safe spot. I don’t think I would have liked to be on the other side of the wall!

Evening wander down into Northern NSW to see if we could find a mulloway. No luck on that front but managed to find a large school of hairtail that were willing to eat our @leaveylures. Caught and released five in an hour and missed countless others.
