A page of Jasper playing. These were all 100% made up from my imagination, but inspired by things I see him do while he’s bouncing around. #jaspersketch #catdrawing #catcartoon #catportrait #sketch #sketchbook #ballpoint #watercolor #dailyzen by @miles.yoshida
I’m super excited to present the latest addition to my Samurai series! 🥳🥳Check out the details!—they nearly killed my eyes. 😅😅This #painting is #watercolor #ink and #gouache, 18 x 24 inches. It’s en route to framers and then off to the lucky collector who purchased this commission. . . The real armor lives at the MET Museum in NYC. It dates from the 18th-19th Century and was made of iron, gold, silver ,copper alloy, leather, lacquer and silk. I couldn’t find the info as to who fabricated this masterpiece, so that remains a mystery for now. #samurai #samuraiarmor #japaneseart #worksonpaper #brushandink #finallyover by @miles.yoshida
Critique my work--Im looking for critical feedback of my Samurai series thus far. Anything goes. The Good, the Bad, the Ambivalent. Whatever. Rip it apart if you must. If you feel inclined, please take this is an open forum to critique these finished pieces (watercolor, ink and gouache). Some background info to inform your viewing: Ive always been attracted to Japanese imagery and culture as well as art coming from the Northern Renaissance. Two very different worlds! But I myself am literally a product of two vastly different worlds. During this series, I've been striving to capture the intricacy of these Japanese cultural gems faithfully but not so much photo realistically. Ive enjoyed celebrating the amazing craftsmanship of the artisans who worked upwards of two years to fabricate a single set of armor back in 14th-16th Century Japan. I'm heavily influenced by artists like Dürer, specifically in the way he imbued naturalistic representations with deeply eloquent observations and lyrical line work. I guess simply put, I hope that my work invites people to get up close and get lost in the micro abstractions of individual line work and the beauty of the armor itself. Sorry for the quasi bullshit art speak, but sometimes it's hard to avoid this when speaking about one's work. Thanks! #samurai #gouachepainting #watercolorpainting #painting #watecolor #gouache #japaneseart #artwork #artcrit #critiquemyart by @miles.yoshida
A three-hour demo/sample that I painted from life at CSUF. I made an initial graphite drawing which took about 30 mins. Then I just painted in watercolor, moving from the largest possible shapes of light to the smallest shapes. Select the lightest possible color that you can find for the largest possibel shape and then work towards specificity. Watercolor rewards genuine shapes. Student think that smooth blending is most important, but smooth blending everywhere dissolves your planes and forms. Learn to examine the rate at which the values change--like a "gradient rate" so to speak. Some gradients shift quickly and suddenly while others are long and gradual. Another important thing to remember is that every shape of light is actually a light signature specific to that planar surface and its orientation to you and the source light. #watercolorportrait #watercolor #lifepainting #lifedrawing by @miles.yoshida
Some planar hand studies for my class at CSUF (Drawing and painting heads and hands). First one is brush and ink. The other two are ballpoint. I enjoyed these planar hand studies because I get lost in the abstraction of light shapes and their signature planes. #sketch #inkdrawing #brushandink #sketchbook #lifestudy by @miles.yoshida
We had a model pose for my Drawing Heads and Hands class last week. I redrew this portrait from memory a few days later. I think I'll use it as a lesson for how to develop visual memory. It's kind of like a memory palace if youve heard of that ancient memorization technique. #sketch #portraitsketch #drawing #portraitart #artschool figuredrawing by @miles.yoshida
I sit and daydream by my small koi pond at night, imagining a larger space for the fish (Mv dad and I built the current one when I was about nine. It holds approx 700 gallons, so it isnt huge.) Daydreaming, I'd often sit and zone-out, visualizing al the details of the yet to be realized pond addition. I drew some sketches a while ago for plans to expand the pond based on my imagination so that I could share my vision with my parents and anyone else. Ive dug out most of the pond, but a lot of work lays ahead. Final shaping, moisture barrier, rebar, concrete, thoroseal etc. by @miles.yoshida
I gave away just about all the drawings I've been posting except for this one--I gave away six sheets altogether, and photos allow us to document the work, so everyone wins. I wanted to keep at least one thing for myself, which was this page. I do think I need to find my own style some day--I still see so much influence from my artistic heroes, but some spontaneous stuff still happens which is nice. I originally had no intention of doing anything to it, but I couldn't help myself while stuck in airports. I just kept drawing from memory and reworked some moments and simply rehearsed others. This helps me memorize the images better, so I can add to my mental library. Again, this is a Caran d'Ache sanguine pencil on white paper. The paper got smudged from the pencil and added some nice tone to reduce the impact of the white paper. People sometimes think this is done to make something look antiquated, but it's actually just nicer to draw on some tone so the medium isn't in such stark contrast to the paper. Trust me on this. #figuredrawing #lifedrawing #figurestudy #lifedrawing by @miles.yoshida
Dancing gestures. The model danced continuously in fifteen minute intervals on the first day of the retreat. Here are results on white and toned paper using Nero black pencils and Caran d'Ache sanguine pencils. If you'd like to try this, you'll find it is really frustrating if you havent studied anatomy or done much figure drawing. Despite what you may think, none of these were done from prolonged observation of any kind. These were the result of mental snapshots which I then tried to puke onto paper as fast as possible, but I wasn't relying solely on my visual memory of the pose; I used my knowledge of the human form as well as a vast mental library of images that exist inside my brain. Obviously this doesn't apply if you approach this practice from a design sense and your drawings are more about abstractions derived from your impressions of the dance. In that case, just go with whatever feels good and satisfies your aesthetic sensibilities. #nudefigure #dancing nude #figuredrawing #gesturesketch by @miles.yoshida
I decided to make a composition rather than simple studies today during the @lymeacademy sculpture retreat. The model studio is packed with sculptors already, so I decided to continue drawing. I like how it turned out. I used a sanguine pencil on toned paper. No eraser. If you want to develop your drawing skills, stop using erasers all together. Learn to visualize your forms and practice your line-work. #figuredrawing #figurestudy #lifedrawing #lifestudy by @miles.yoshida
Some studies of a multi-figure pose while attending @lymeacademy 's Sculpture Retreat. by @miles.yoshida
Two recent favorites. 30 second gestures. Drawing light as much as anatomy in these. I really enjoy this method because of how unpredictable the outcomes are. #figuredrawing #gesturesketch #gesturedrawing #figurestudy #lifedrawing by @miles.yoshida
