grateful for the opportunity to work with the great Jon Voight in our latest documentary tribute to Robert Duvall. We discussed Duvall’s early days in off-broadway with Dustin Hoffman and Gene Hackman when they were young actors struggling to pay rent.

We discussed Duvall’s love of accents (probably a product of his itinerant Navy brat upbringing) and Voight’s work in two New Hollywood watershed films: Midnight Cowboy and Deliverance, movies which had a huge impact on me when I decided to pursue filmmaking.

And of course any discussion of Duvall’s legacy is incomplete without mentioning the smell of napalm in the morning, his crotchety banter with Tommy Lee Jones in Lonesome Dove, and his singular performance of consigliere Tom Hagen.

We are losing a generation of great artists. I hope this project remembers one of its brightest talents in some small way. taken in Beverly Hills by @milesvstephenson

In our new doc “The Real Godfather,” we follow how the mafia tried to stop The Godfather film from reaching the big screen. It’s streaming now on @foxnation

As far back as I can remember, I was always fascinated by The Godfather (1972). Whether it was the Prince of Darkness Gordon Willis’ shadows or Coppola and Puzo’s magnificent dialogue or the performances of too many giants to list, the experience always felt more like a distant memory than a movie.

That’s why it was a surreal experience to sit down with actor Gianni Russo who played Carlo Rizzi, the treacherous son-in-law of Marlon Brando in the original film. @realgiannirusso told me stories I couldn’t believe: how gangsters stole Coppola’s production van off the streets of Little Italy, how Lenny Montana worked as Colombo’s enforcer before playing the role of Luca Brasi, and how the producer of the film Al Ruddy faced death threats until Paramount brokered a deal with the mob.

After directing, writing, and producing this, I have a new level of appreciation for the movie because I realized just how miraculous it is that it escaped the clutches of the mob, made it to the big screen, and became a lasting symbol of American culture

Big thanks to @romono.3 @timetoburnaw @danmurray_14 @katecampisi @harris.steinfeld @vin_stracq @ckfernandez.actor for helping bring this to fruition taken in Little Italy by @milesvstephenson

Gene Hackman was always a hero of mine. We lost one of the greats. But when I sat down with James Woods to chat about his iconic 70s movies, I realized Gene would live on forever in our imagination and on the big screen. Huge thanks to @grantrosenmeyer and @realjameswoods for sharing their incredible Gene stories with me.
