If you've been to our shows, you might have heard us talk about this, but we wanted to take a moment to explain the meaning behind "milieu therapy."

Germany after the First World War was facing a suicide epidemic, an epidemic of despair. One doctor, Magnus Hirschfeld, himself a gay man, took note that many of his patients spoke of suicide in the context of being gay/trans, and he decided that if the Hippocratic Oath he swore as a doctor bound him to protect life, then it obligated him to make life worth living, at all costs. He founded the Institute for Sexual Research in 1919, which conducted some of the first gender-affirming surgeries in the West, when other doctors refused to do them. And when his patients came to him full of despair because of the way the world treated them, he frequently prescribed "milieu therapy"-- simply, to be in community with other gay and trans people, in the drag bars and cabarets of Weimar Berlin. What he was saying was that there was nothing wrong with his patients; they just needed to be around people who accepted and loved them.

It's notable that almost the first thing the Nazis did when they took power was to burn the library of the Institute. The photo we've all seen of the book burning is that: the destruction of thousands of pages of research on sex and gender, which set the field of gender affirming care back by decades.

Jack had been booking DIY shows for almost a decade under their own name, and when Turbo Haus offered a space to do a free monthly show in 2024, they needed a name. Milieu Therapy was born out of a desire to see more queer and trans artists on stage, and to make a space for queer and trans people to be in community. Wherever our shows happen, that's the intent. Especially now, when queer and trans people are again being scapegoated for all kinds of societal ills that we did not cause, making spaces where we can be safe and loved, where we can share in the catharsis of live music and expression, is a potent medicine. We invite you to share it with us. by @milieu.therapy

We are helping to organize a fundraising raffle to raise money for a team of activists who are filing a lawsuit against the SPVM for their brutality and repression towards Palestinian activists since 2023.

Our goal is to raise $10,000 by the end of November, so we need all the help we can get. The raffle will be held on November 15th at our benefit show at La Sala Rossa on November 15, featuring @raespoon, @tetaards_strippers, and @ekkaburst.

If you'd like to donate something to the raffle, please DM us ASAP! by @milieu.therapy
