A big congratulations to Dr. Kari Searls and Tom on the arrival of beautiful Poppy Josephine earlier this month 💖 ! Given the amount of time she has already spent with horses we're guessing Kari and Tom have another future horse lover on their hands 😉🐴

🚨 Hudson Valley horse owners: is your horse up to date on rabies vaccination?

Rabies is not just a wildlife concern. Recent confirmed cases in our region (in Rhinebeck in early October and this week in Peekskill!) are an important reminder to check your horse’s vaccination status.

🦠 Rabies is almost always fatal once clinical signs appear, but vaccination offers vital protection.

🐴 Make sure rabies is on your horse’s vaccine checklist. Not sure when your horse is due? Give us a call to check.

⚡ Shockwave therapy: helps horses get back to feeling their best!

We use extracorporeal shockwave therapy (ESWT) to support healing, manage pain, and aid rehabilitation in horses with a variety of musculoskeletal conditions.

🐎 From tendon and ligament injuries to suspensory issues, back pain, and select bone and soft tissue conditions, shock wave therapy is a versatile, non-invasive tool in equine sports medicine.

How does it work? Shockwaves stimulate biological processes involved in tissue repair, including blood vessel formation and tissue remodeling, helping support the body's natural healing response.

Plus, it seems the barn dogs and kittens really enjoy the shockwave equipment 🤣

Every horse is different, so we tailor treatment recommendations to each horse's needs and incorporate shock wave therapy into a comprehensive veterinary care and rehabilitation plan.

Have questions about whether shock wave therapy might help your horse? We're happy to chat! 🩺 by @millbrook_equine

Here's to another great autumn weekend in the Hudson Valley 🍁🍂🐴💛

#millbrookequine #equinevetlife #hudsonvalleyny #hudsonvalleyhorses by @millbrook_equine

Fall foliage this year is pretty spectacular, but autumn views bring added grazing risks for your horse! Here's what to be on the lookout for 🍁 👀:

🌿 Watch for toxic plants!

🫐 Pokeweed: Common along fence lines and field edges, pokeweed has reddish-purple stems and dark berries. The roots are most toxic, but other parts of the plant can also cause illness if ingested, including colic and diarrhea.

🍁 Red maple leaves: Wilted or dried leaves can cause life-threatening damage to red blood cells. Check pastures after storms and windy weather.

🌰 Oak leaves and acorns: Eating large quantities can cause gastrointestinal and kidney problems.

🐴 Fall also brings increased laminitis risk.

🍁 Stressed grasses can accumulate higher sugar concentrations, increasing risk for susceptible horses.

🍁 Reduced exercise can contribute to weight gain, and overweight horses are at greater risk of laminitis.

🍁 Seasonal hormonal changes may complicate management for horses with PPID (aka cushings), a condition associated with increased laminitis risk.

A few seasonal reminders:
✔️ Check pastures for toxic plants and fallen branches.
✔️ Provide adequate hay/ forage options when grazing is limited so bored horses don't scavenge for what they might otherwise not reach for.
✔️ Monitor weight, exercise, and pasture access, especially for horses with a history of laminitis or PPID.

🚨 Suspect your horse has eaten a toxic plant? Contact your veterinarian promptly.

Our repro team is gearing up to host another TVA Day for ICSI on Thursday, 10/22!

In other words; owners are sending mares in to our clinic for transvaginal aspiration of oocytes (eggs).

This is an important first step for reproduction via ICSI (intracytoplasmic sperm injection) that we have successfully offered our clients beginning last year. Mares are able to undergo this procedure without interruption to their work or competition schedule and any resulting viable embryos can be later implanted into recipient mares.

Should you be interested in learning more or having your mare participate this time or at a future date, please email our office ASAP at millbrookequine@gmail.com for more details.

👀 SEE something? SAY something.

When it comes to your horse’s eyes, “let’s wait and see how it looks tomorrow” is usually not the best game plan.

Call your vet if you notice:
👁️ Swelling around the eye
💧 Discharge from the eye
🌫️ A change in the cornea’s clarity or opacity

Or, really, anything that looks different from your horse's normal.

Eye problems can escalate quickly. What starts as a little squint or watery eye can become a much bigger problem!

Awesome to have so many members of our team helping to teach and wrangle horses at the 11th Annual Future Equine Practitioners Weekend!

Drs Cyra Erwin and Miranda Gosselin taught radiographic positioning this morning and then Dr Gosselin informed students about a “Day in the Life” of an ambulatory / integrative medicine vet! Drs Alana King and Kari Searls taught abdominal/ thoracic ultrasound and we were so grateful to have Jo, Katie, Meghan, and Angela there helping plus moral support from Dr Julia Brower. The puppies were of course a very welcome bonus 👌

The weekend continues with a panel this evening and then podiatry, lower limb ultrasound, and laceration repair tomorrow.

We absolutely love co-hosting this event with @rhinebeck_equine and @oakencroft_equine as part of @cavalcadeeducation We owe a big thanks to our industry partners who help make it happen and a HUGE thank you to our MEVC clients who stepped up to Sponsor-A-Student this year!! Thank you to JCM, RW, HV, KL, TG, and PS.

Thanks to @thenyra @mwianimalhealth @boehringerus_equine #ponyexpresshorsetransport @zoetisequine @epicurpharma @kyequineresearch @aurorapharmaceuticalinc @doclanes @merckanimalhealth @universalimaginginc for helping us make this event happen.

Support the future of equine vet med with us!

The 11th Annual Future Equine Practitioners Weekend is just days away.

The independently-owned equine veterinary practices that make up Cavalcade Education (Millbrook Equine + Rhinebeck Equine + Equine Clinic at OakenCroft) have collaborated to create a weekend full of hands-on learning, networking, and engaging lectures for 40 current equine veterinary students.

Our teams work together year-round to ensure top-tier programming and secure funds from industry partners in order to create an invaluable weekend experience for up-and-coming horse doctors. Veterinarians from all three Cavalcade practices volunteer their time to plan this weekend and to mentor students! Our incredible support staff puts in extra hours to help ensure a great experience for students, and we are lucky enough to have teaching support from veterinarians outside of the Cavalcade circle in addition to farriers and equine nutritionists.

🔑 FEPW (and programming like it!) is vital for the future of equine medicine especially considering the continuous decline in numbers of practicing equine veterinarians over the past few years. Contributing to this event is one way to help ensure that your horses have dedicated, knowledgeable care for years to come.

We hope you (and/ or your barn family!) will consider sponsoring a student to help us make a difference for the future of equine vet med. We have about half of our 40 student attendees covered through the S-A-S program.

Visit cavalcadeeducation.com/fepw and scroll down to "sponsor-a-student" to pledge your support.
