EFF presents our next activity leader spotlight 🔦 Louis Mielke (@millennialmyces) who will be speaking about ‘Fungal community succession and carbon cycling from heathland to forest habitats’

This talk aims to take a journey through long-term afforestation experiments in the Grampians, evaluating how soil fungal communities shift under decades of birch and pine planting in heathlands. Utilizing high-throughput DNA metabarcoding, decomposition assays, and soil carbon analyses, we’ll discuss intricate relationships between fungal succession, organic matter turnover, and carbon sequestration.

Louis will be presenting at EFF on Saturday (October 3rd) at 11am! We can’t wait! 🌲🍄

Eyelash fungi (Scutellinia spp.) are always lovely to find. The microscopy is also always a treat their large spores and orange pigments are really beautiful. The paraphyses shimmer with orange crystals! by @millennialmyces

This is a close relative of Ash Dieback but isn’t considered a plant pathogen. However, it is interesting to note that the Horse Chestnut leaves drop quite early in the summer and this cup fungus appears to be a latent saprotroph, “waiting” for the leaves to drop before it consumes labile sugars and cellulose from the leaves. taken in University of Stirling by @millennialmyces
