The Marilyn Monroe (@marilynmonroe) centennial celebration continues with select works by Morrison Hotel Gallery photographers Milton H. Greene, Douglas Kirkland and Lawrence Schiller now on view at the Academy Museum of Motion Pictures. With an oeuvre spanning more than four decades punctuated by iconic portraiture which defines the very essence of 20th century glamour, the legacy of the late-great Milton H. Greene is, well, evergreen as we look back on his voracious life and career in celebration of what would be the legendary photographer’s 104th birthday.

Reading like a Rolodex of Hollywood’s brightest stars from its gilded era, Greene’s extensive list of lauded subjects spans the gamut from Audrey Hepburn, Sammy Davis Jr and Frank Sinatra to Dizzy Gillespie, Judy Garland and Alfred Hitchcock. However, rumination on the artist’s true magnum opus invariably leads one down a rabbit hole that is his compelling series of portraits with lifelong friend Marilyn Monroe (@marilynmonroe), simultaneously capturing the grandeur of silver screen goddess and shadowy nuances of an altogether mortal Norma Jean during his seldom-discussed tenure as the president of her fan club. The result? An enigmatic body of work that transcends life itself and popular imagining more than a half-century onward.

“I learned that life is a long and difficult road, but you have to keep going, or you’ll fall by the wayside.”

Midweek motivation courtesy of the late-great Steve McQueen (@stevemcqueen) whose rugged charm, quiet intensity and unquenchable need for speed earn him the enduring moniker, the “King of Cool.” McQueen didn’t chase cool, he defined it.

On January 3, 1955, Marilyn Monroe (@marilynmonroe) and legendary photographer Milton H. Greene (@miltonhgreene) solidified their partnership by signing documents for Marilyn Monroe Productions (MMP), a groundbreaking independent company to gain creative control, with Monroe as President and Greene as VP, marking a major career shift after her divorce from Joe DiMaggio and dissatisfaction with studio roles at 20th Century Fox.

This trailblazing moment, followed by a public announcement on January 7th, empowered Monroe to challenge Hollywood’s studio system, with Greene’s photography also capturing her artistic depth beyond the bombshell image. 71 years onward, the fruits of their historic collaborative relationship are continued through career-defining moments captured on candid camera now on view at morrisonhotelgallery.com.

Wishing a happy 110th birthday to a man of many hats and talents, the truly incomparable Mr. Frank Sinatra (@sinatra).

Chairman of the Board, leader of the Rat Pack, Ol’ Blue Eyes, Sultan of Swoon, the Voice, role model to many and, to a lucky few, Dad. No matter what you call him, it’s no secret that at the all-encompassing core of the Sinatra legacy is a timeless star quality of unprecedented proportion which beams all the more radiantly at this most wonderful time of year.

As we vacillate between reflections upon the innumerable achievements for which #Sinatra might be best remembered and an almost equally long checklist of things left to do in preparation for the holidays, it’s only fitting that we get into the spirit this afternoon with his 1948 studio album, ‘Christmas Songs by Sinatra’, as we deck the halls from WeHo to SoHo-ho-ho in anticipation of all the holly jolly happenings in the works.

“We were introduced to Sammy in 1953. We were deep, deep friends until his death. He became an everyday part of our lives. We did everything together. We traveled, ate, worked and looked after one another. We sat through a thousand performances and we shared a devout love for movies and other entertainment trivia. We took Marilyn to see him at the Copa. After being on for over two hours, he performed his closing number ‘Birth of the Blues’, to thunderous applause. Marilyn tapped my shoulder, smiled and said, ‘When Sammy works, he becomes Cary Grant in front of your very eyes.’”
