Losing a child is not something you “get over.” It becomes a part of you forever.
But as time passes, it gets harder to keep talking about it with friends or family.
That’s why spaces like MIMÁTIS matter, a community where you can talk about it forever.
Because those who’ve been through it, understand it in a way others simply can’t.

October is Pregnancy & Infant Loss Awareness Month.
The history of this month goes back to 1988, when U.S. President Ronald Reagan officially proclaimed October as Pregnancy and Infant Loss Awareness Month. The proclamation recognised the profound impact of miscarriage, stillbirth and infant death on families and called for greater understanding and support for parents experiencing these losses.
Over time, October 15 became Pregnancy and Infant Loss Remembrance Day, creating a specific day to remember the babies who died and the families who continue to carry their memory.
Today, October is recognised as an important period for raising awareness around pregnancy and infant loss, remembering babies, and advocating for better support and care for bereaved families.
At MIMÁTIS, we believe awareness has to go further than a single month.
It means making reliable information easier to find.
It means improving the way families are supported after a loss.
It means connecting organisations and professionals across countries.
And it means creating places where babies can be remembered.
This October, we remember the babies who are no longer here and the families who continue to love them.
🌱 Visit the MIMÁTIS Digital Flower Garden at mimatis.org to see the babies whose names have been shared and remembered.

A change in fetal movements in late pregnancy should always be taken seriously. Reduced or altered movements can sometimes be an early sign that the baby is under stress or not getting enough oxygen, which is why prompt clinical assessment matters. #pregnancy #baby #stillbirth #embrazo #nestumas A change in fetal movements in late pregnancy should always be taken seriously. Grief is not just emotional, it is deeply physical. Research shows that 30-60% of bereaved parents meet the criteria for PTSD, with many receiving no formal support. The body processes loss through the same pathways as fear, which explains symptoms like exhaustion, anxiety, and difficulty concentrating. These reactions are not weakness; they are the nervous system responding to profound loss. Caring for the body through rest, nourishment, and gentle support - is an essential part of healing.#pregnancyloss #babyloss #stillbirth #miscarriage #stillbirthawareness by @mimatis.community

Why Is Someone Still Grieving?

One of the most common questions we hear after baby loss is: “Why are they still grieving?”

The answer is simple: because love does not have an expiration date.

When a baby dies during pregnancy, at birth, or shortly after, parents do not just lose a child. They lose a future they had already begun to imagine. They lose first birthdays, bedtime stories, family traditions, and countless moments that will never happen. The depth of grief is not measured by how long a baby lived, but by how deeply they were loved.

Society often expects grief to follow a timeline. A few weeks, a few months, perhaps a year. But baby loss does not work that way. Parents may learn how to carry their grief, but they do not simply leave it behind. Their child remains part of their family and part of their story.

Years later, a birthday, a due date, a family gathering, or a simple question such as “How many children do you have?” can reopen wounds that never fully disappeared. This does not mean they are stuck in grief. It means they are continuing to love and remember someone who mattered.

Instead of asking why someone is still grieving, perhaps we should ask how we can support them.

No parent should have to grieve on a schedule. And no child should be forgotten because time has passed.#pregnancyloss #babyloss #stillbirth #neonatalloss taken in Vilnius Old Town by @mimatis.community

Too often, parents are asked practical questions immediately after receiving devastating news: “What would you like to do now?” While these questions are necessary, they should not come right away. Hospitals and healthcare providers should intentionally create space between delivering the diagnosis and discussing next steps.

Giving parents even a short period of uninterrupted time acknowledges the magnitude of their loss and allows them to begin adjusting to their new reality. Compassionate care is not only about what is said, but also about allowing silence, presence, and time when words are not enough.#pregnancyloss #babyloss #stillbirth #miscarriage #pregnancy taken in Barcelona, Spain by @mimatis.community

“What C.S Lewis described in 1960 is now understood more clearly. Grief activates the same neurological pathways as fear and threat response. The body doesn’t distinguish between types of loss. It responds to the absence of someone it has been wired to protect, to care for, to love. This is why parents so often describe feeling unable to eat, unable to sleep properly, unable to concentrate. “ this article draws on the published text of A Grief Observed by C.S Lewis, on MIMÁTIS.org #pregnancyloss #babyloss #stillbirth #neonatalloss #miscarriage taken in New York by @mimatis.community
