I grieved for her and I searched for her
The girl with the untamed curls
Who laughed like it was the only sound she knew
And floated across the world on strings of poetry
Like words alone could feed her soul
And she was hungry for it all —
For life and for purpose and stories
I wanted to tell her that it wasn’t her fault
That the people she loved didn’t die because it was 2:01 and she was late
And that she didn’t need to skip meals to feel in control
I thought I’d tell her it was okay to come home
That it was her broken pieces that made her whole —
Lost and found
Shades of light fading under pressure
Bleeding into cracks and corners nobody would ever find
A careless mouth of painted smiles and open arms floating
over time and space
Parts of her so carelessly tossed,
as if they were no longer necessary
As if they’d died
And what would she tell me today?
The girl with the dreams too big too swallow
What would she see and would she like it
And at twilight, when the doubt gnaws and fear lights up
Beneath my own disapproving eyes
I remind myself that she was real
And I am her
That life hurt and it made me afraid
And I laughed when I was sad and cried when I was happy
I told everyone who they were
And to myself I told a story
And I cracked wit so I wouldn’t break
In front of the crowd
Until one day I decided I would go back
And traveled there with everything on my back
And my bags became lighter
Until I had nothing but myself
Until I realized there was no new exotic destination
But a return
That the road toward home was not lonely but Alone
Circling the heart until it widens
Or closing our eyes until we are Awake
The journey toward freedom is acceptance and the path toward a collective redemption is in our singular healing
For the child inside and Gd’s purest manifestation
For every blade of grass sprung from time of creation
For Adam and Eve and the highest belief
That we are one
And the truth that was whispered and told to the girl with the untamed curls
Is the only message that matters
The message that we are to be
just who we are

When God talks to me, He tells me it’s all much simpler than I think. That we are protected, always. That He brought us here not to figure it out, but to experience what it feels like to be alive. To love things we cannot keep and to ache for things we cannot name. To discover that even in uncertainty, we have never been outside his care.

I don’t have a timid prayer left in me and I forget that my hands are being held and my heart is being guided. The truth is bigger than me and my soul loves that. Every time I think I evolve hard, God levels me up. Every time I think the plot is stale, God throws in a wild card. Divine design and nothing else.

Listen here honey chillllee…. I wrote a whole caption and it got nixed, so we’re starting over. If we’re saying God is the conductor and the choreographer, we need to stay believers even when the ‘miracle’ doesn’t pan out exactly. We need to say that allll of it is good even when it feels like we’re the punchline of God’s joke. Real faith is believing in the unseen, a real flex is believing it’s FOR YOU even when you don’t want it.

Last summer, I was on the way home from upstate NY and crying so much I couldn’t breathe out of my nose. I thought I’d have a panic attack and almost considered pulling over on the side of road. I was at my lowest. This summer, these last couple of months, the woman I am now wouldn’t recognize the woman in that car, but the me in the car knew I’d get here. I knew it was all bringing me closer to the creator, to myself, to who I’m supposed to become, what I’m supposed to give to this world. It didn’t all work out. Things didn’t change right away or work out exactly as I’d have written it. It was worse and better and exactly right. It didn’t work out, but iiii did. And it wasn’t because I manifested anything or did anything completely out of character - it was because I showed up every day with more of myself, more myself, and the experiences themselves were the medicine, life always is. Everything intertwines, everything connects, the soul is always pulling us forward and sometimes back, and God the true artist, sees every fleck of paint, all the blood, sweat, and tears, every crack and every heartache and all the love and joy to create the greatest masterpiece He calls our lives.

Testimony that becomes part of your bloodline, mothers whose empty arms become part of our history, guttural cries without a shred of shame that sounded over and over again, tunnels that swallowed our people, monsters that breathed our air, wives waiting by doors and phones, sirens that seemed to never stop, love that seemed to be the lone survivor even anger our hearts were broken….God is the conductor and we are the music and we will sing until our mourning and joy learn to share the same breath.

I told you that we’re the dancers and God’s the choreographer. We’re all in on it, too. It means loosening your grip on life, opening your hand, so God can hold it. You win when you’re most yourself, when you keep it 100% real. When you’re the most YOU. Be gentle with yourself, hold yourself accountable. You’ll find that sometimes it means considering what things and people and spaces light you up. Sometimes you will leave things behind. Things will keep on changing, if you’re lucky, so will you. Be honest in finding out who you really are. Life is not neat, nobody’s is, but at least it can be real. You’re here and I’m here and it’s a gift to be here with people, people who feel like we’ve crossed over many lifetimes with. It’s all a miracle really. It’s all divine design and God’s clock. He’s always got us, especially when it’s messy (usually means you’re about to get somewhere really good)…. Keep believing in you, knowing that it’s not YOU, and embracing the experience of our own humanity. You get it.

Sometimes I think I’ve been here five thousand times and I keep coming back to remind everyone that they deserve to be here, how their purpose is seeped into every part of them and all they need to do is keep dripping, unraveling, searching, believing, re-meeting themselves... Keep spilling themselves into the places they were sent here to touch. Keep leaving little pieces of themselves wherever they go. Every person is touched by you. I guess in a not-so-deep way, it’s to remind myself of my own purpose, my own gifts, my own love, my own heart. We were brought here, it’s all an experience - FOR us. Every moment is important and meaningful. Every single second has a purpose. Divine design. God’s exquisite timing. All we know is that we don’t know and all the evidence we need is that we’re here.
