When Love Jones came out, EVERYBODY wanted to be a poet 😭

@j_ivy remembers Chicago’s poetry scene before the 1997 classic hit theaters….and then suddenly, everybody had a poem.

As someone who was actually building a career in poetry during that era, J said the movie HELPED in a big way.

@j_ivy ‘s mom challenged him to stop carrying years of anger and pain and finally forgive his father.

Eventually, he did.

J. poured that healing into “Dear Father,” which would later become his book Dear Father: Breaking the Cycle of Pain.

That journey helped put J. in the emotional place to write the unforgettable verse he would eventually perform alongside Kanye West and Jay-Z on “Never Let Me Down” from The College Dropout.

The pain, forgiveness and writing were all connected.

For nearly 10 years, @j_ivy hadn’t heard from his father.

Then, after praying for the strength to forgive him and hoping they could reconnect, something happened J. never expected.

His father called.

They got the chance to rebuild their relationship, talk through the pain and make up for some of the years they had lost.

About a year and a half later, his father passed away.

Looking back, J. believes that phone call gave them something neither of them knew they were running out of: time.

He learned forgiveness isn’t about forgetting what happened. It’s about what you choose to do with the time you still have.
