Pt. 1

What’s that feeling called when you, a child of a refugee and immigrant, return to the country your parents escaped from?

But what if you grew up in the USA and the micro-racism you have faced your entire life has always reminded you that you are a guest in the country you were born, yet when in the homeland, it’s clear you’re a foreigner?

No, no, I’m not done. There’s also that feeling of knowing your parents’ struggles of building a life for you in another country meant there were opportunities beyond their wildest imagination? Oh also, when you are in the homeland meeting friends and family, you realized that their lives are completely different in a way that is not even comparable to yours - with freedom of choice, lifestyle, income, career, etc. The only reason you are even able to have these opportunities is because your parents moved to the US, because their country was bombed and at war, and the consequence was that they left their home, friends, life, and dream, to go to the unknown and start over with nothing. Maybe they did not do this for you, as it was necessary for their own survival, but without that, you wouldn’t exist. No, don’t look away. You cannot look away from the lifestyle that is oftentimes hidden the eyes of tourists because this is the motherland and you have always been raised to identify yourself as Vietnamese. This is the country my parent’s came from. What is that feeling?

What about if you noticed that the trauma experienced by the refugees and immigrants made them hold on to the past traditions and carry on the language, while in the motherland, your people have been able to move on and the culture, language, and tradition has evolved. You see it in the innovative street food and the locals smirking at you when you use an outdated term.
