Lockdown was hard. This pandemic has been hard. And we’ve all experienced it in different ways. A few weeks ago we invited our team to hear a presentation by Oxfordshire Mind on the importance of mental health and the “five steps to mental wellbeing.” One of those steps is learning a new skill. Last Friday our team took the plunge together with a company-wide watercolour arts and crafts session, hosted by our in-house painter extraordinaire, Sebastian. Together we learned how to mix colours, paint lemons, leafy things and even a koi fish!

Creative endeavours like this help us shake off some of the rust, bring us closer together, tap into our imaginations and feel alive in this beautiful world. by @mind_foundry_ai

On this day in 1954, the world prematurely lost one of its greatest minds, Alan Turing.

A visionary who never backed down from challenging the accepted norms of society or technology, he is recognised for laying the foundations of computer technology and AI, and his work in Bletchley Park saved hundreds of thousands of lives and helped bring World War II to a close.

Decisions made by governments and other public sector organisations affect the lives of large numbers of people in profound ways every day. If considerations for ethics and responsibility are not made during the processes for designing, building, and implementing a solution with AI, unintended and unanticipated far-reaching consequences can be felt.

Mind Foundry recently collaborated with the Scottish Government on a project that requires the use of AI in the public sector to improve human outcomes at scale. We participated in this project through the CivTech program and were asked to share our thinking on how to apply AI ethically and responsibly in the public sector as part of the CivTech5 Demo Week in February 2021.
