How to get to Ayutthaya and Wats to see ☀ 👀🛕

This historic city and former capital of Thailand is a truly fascinating place to visit. And being so close to Bangkok makes it a brilliant day trip to get away from crowds and shopping malls.

There are several ways you can get from Bangkok to Ayutthaya.
To go via bus/coach, you can go to Morchit Bus terminal, tickets are 60 baht and take around 2 hours. You can also go via train from Hua Lumphong. Trains with AC cost around 250 baht, and rapid train without AC is ~50 Baht.

Once you get to Ayutthaya, bear in mind you need to get tuk-tuks from place to place or you can rent a bike.
We actually got a taxi to the bus station with the aim of going the cheaper way, until the taxi driver offered to take us directly for the day for 1800 Baht. In the end, we are really glad we went this way, especially with the heat being quite oppressive.

What is there to do in Ayutthaya?

📍Temples: There are loads of Wats in Ayutthaya, but we focused on 6 of the most well-known ones: Wat Yai Chai Mongkhon, Wat Phanan Choeng, Wat Ratchaburana, Wat Mahathat, Wat Phra Si Sanphet and Wat Chaiwatthanaram. All of these ruins are incredible to explore, and some (like the buddha head grown into the tree) are just mind-blowing.

🍜 Food: The must-eat dishes are Boat Noodle (a soup made out of blood, mixed with spices; it's more delicious than it sounds, I promise) and candy floss roti (you roll the candy floss into a thin sheet of roti). We tried 2 boat noodle places, Pa Lek and Lung Lek. Both were super tasty, and we loved how you really need to order 3 or 4 bowls each to fill up.

We’re back! 👋👋

Hope you’ve all been happy and healthy as can be, and enjoyed the Christmas break! 🎄❤

If you're wondering what happened to us, we went on a spontaneous month-long trip to Thailand (hence the lack of posting) 🧳🎒 😊

Sure it was a close call at some points to actually go... like having our return flight cancelled both 1 day before our flight out, then 1 day before our flight back 😱.

All in all though, we had an incredible time.

We’re also SO SO grateful we were able to get away at such a complicated time 😊

Activities you must do in Bangkok, and what to avoid 🇹🇭

Since BKK is my home city, there are a few touristy things that I think are definitely worth it and some...not so much.

🇹🇭 Cultural highlights- visiting the Grand Palace, Wat Pho, and Wat Arun is a must-do. The architecture and history are spectacular, but please remember to cover your arms and legs! Take water and fan because it gets really hot.

🍜 Yaowarat (Chinatown) - THE place to go for some delicious food, the only drawback is that it gets pretty hectic.

🦀 Jay Fai - made internationally popular by Netflix BUT it's something that you'd do only once. The queue is really long and slow. The Crab Omelette is packed full of crab, but for the price we think this is a meal you could definitely avoid.

🛍 Shopping - Our favourite places to shop (in order) were MBK Mall, Chatuchak Market and Pratunam. You also have many hyper-luxurious places like Siam Paragon which are fun to walk around. MBK was our favourite because it had loads of levels with different things, retained the street market stall vibe with reasonable prices, and had a tasty food court!

🍾 Khao San Road - the epitome of the tourist spot. This place was very empty when we went, since it now requires a negative lateral flow for entry. At the moment there is no reason to visit, but Bangkok has so many more authentic things to do that we wouldn’t recommend unless you are looking to party with other foreigners.

🛶 Floating Market - we went to Klong Lad Ma Yom as it's closer to Bangkok centre. We enjoyed it as it's quieter, there was plenty of food for us to try and bring home, but it doesn't give the floating market experience some people might be looking for where you can buy things from a boat. What we spent in Santorini for 5 days for 2 people!

🥗 Food: £573 ($641) was the biggest bulk of our budget, despite us trying to be careful and find good value restaurants.We even made some of our own breakfast and ordered reasonable price gyros for lunch. If you are planning to go, expect to pay quite high prices for meals, especially breakfast and dinner.

🏨 Accommodation: £499 ($558) we went for a couple of mid-range studios in Imerovigli and Oia, both close to the cliff but not specifically on it. If we ever go back, we’d be tempted to splurge for one with the hot tub and cliffside view, although prices can be a bit crazy.

✈️ Transport: £413 ($462) including around £150 ($168) each on flights and the rest on taxis to get from one hotel to the other.

🛍 Shopping: £55 ($61) on some souvenirs (like canvas prints) and snacks.

In total we spent £1540 ($1772). £770 ($861) per person or £154 ($172) per person per night!

5 Awesome Travel Games You Need to Try 🎲🃏

We love packing a few games with us when we go abroad.

In our experience, it means we’re much less likely to be on our phones in the evening, and we can sit, chat and laugh over an activity maybe as the sun sets.🌇

Best things to do in London 🇬🇧

🚤 Cruise down the River Thames - catch it on a sunny day and see all of the best London landmarks

⛪️ Admire the view at St. Paul’s Cathedral - sip on cocktails on a rooftop bar whilst enjoying the iconic view

🦕 Visit the Natural History Museum - best to go on weekdays to avoid the crowds

🏘 Explore Notting Hill - the place to go for that typical London picture in front of colourful houses.
🪴 Buy plants & flowers at Colombia Road Market - great for all your house plant needs, and you will probably end up walking home with a gigantic plant!

The most surreal sunset we’ve ever seen 🌅🤯

The sky was so red and purple, we were actually speechless. We wondered if the sky was temporarily broken 😂

We’re off to Santorini in 3 weeks, and apparently sunsets there are not too bad either… 👀

Tips for eating street food!

Personally, the best part of travelling is trying new food. What better way to do that than to walk around and sample as many things as you can at a street food stall/market?

Here are some tips to make sure you use your stomach space wisely:

👀 Where are the locals – locals already have their firm favourites, and so try to spot which stores they are grabbing their dinner to take home.

💵 Don’t let the price fool you - similar to the above, locals are rarely prepared to pay a premium for the classic meals they enjoy. Usually the cheapest street food is the most authentic and tastiest.

🍖 Don't stick to only what you know – it's tempting to just go for classic grilled meat or deep fried stuff, but there are other weird and wonderful things out there that you haven't tried yet.

🧑‍🍳 Look for the experts - when a store does one kind of dish, it’s more likely they do it well.

👩🏽‍🍳 Look at how they prepare or store the food – if the kitchen/cutlery looks dirty and flies are on the meat...probably best to avoid it.

🧊 Skip the ice – generally best to avoid ice, especially if you are unsure of the water source.

When you eat street food, you do have to embrace the experience and accept it’s not going to be as comfortable or simple as a meal in a restaurant. However, there’s an endlessly delicious number of options to choose from, you just have to find them!

And just in case, might be worth packing some Imodium and other rehydration medicines. 😅

A foodie in Chiang Mai 🍚

Thailand has recently removed their travel pass requirement, which means travelling to Thailand should be a little less complicated. 🥳

Which is the best village in the Cotwolds? 🤔🏡

Now that’s a question that has raised some debate!

Last Summer we did our best to see as much of the Cotswolds as we could in 4 days. 🌅

We stayed in Bourton-on-the-Water. All in all, we found the balance of activities 🚂 , restaurants 🍔 and trails 🚶‍♂️to be the perfect mix.
