At last, a tiny blackbird!

Sorry I disappeared for a while. I got hit with whopper fatigue last week, which should have been no surprise after all the fun I had in France.

Managing fatigue from Long Covid is like paying your credit card bill at the end of the month after you have spent all your money: it hurts but hopefully you have nice things to snuggle up to whilst you suffer.

I just need to pop this little one into his hanging bell jar, finished with a pretty ribbon ready for your shelf, window or dare I say 🌲 Christmas tree 🌲 (too early?)

A kingfisher whilst I finish my rook...

I honestly forgot what a beauty he was until I stumbled back onto these photos. I used silk fibre for the azure blue glow, and other plant fibres as well as wool in his flight feathers for lustre.

He was a playful joy to create! taken in Whitstable by @mindfulfelting

Autumn is the season of looking to the sky, watching for new birds passing or returning on migration.

I've had a few moons waiting for their settings ever since the eclipse. I love the painterly feel of these geese in wool. They must see so much of the world on their travels. Do you think they look down at me whilst I stare wonderingly up at them?

Last weekend to come and see me and my birds at the @eastkentartistsopenhouses House 18 from 11am to 5pm on Sydenham Street in Whitstable.

It's that time again!

I am about to make lots of miniature birds ready for the Whitstable Artist & Makers trail, just as I did last year when I made this teeny tiny blackbird.
Last year, every time I made a tiny bird for the trail, someone here would ask me to reserve it for them instead. Like this blackbird which was snapped-up very quickly!

So, this year I am offering a little window of time to request your own miniature Christmas bird before I start. That way I may have some left for the WAM trail at the end of November.

There is still one more weekend for me as part of the @eastkentartistsopenhouses trail, 11-5pm this Saturday and Sunday, so I would love to see you there too. Lots of fabulous Whitstable artists have the stamina for a third weekend, but I simply don't. Not if I want to make all those miniature Christmas birds too.

On another note, I just read an amazing article describing studies showing blackbirds feeding their chicks fish. Blackbirds catching fish - what the actual! (Link in comments.)

Building a bird on a brush.
This is a flat-backed bird being made at speed using core wool to build up its shape.
Making loose sketches and working on paper to get the finished size of bird I want, I tend to translate that into wool by eye without a template. It keeps things feeling organic and free.
I love using a brush to needlefelt on, and wish I could find a really big one to fit my desktop.

Titmice!
We all love bluetits, surely. The way they flit and peep between the leaves. I was blessed with a nest box of bluetit happiness this year, so it was fated that I make my own flock.
The sprig of greenery in this photo isn't actually leaves - it's caterpillars!
Each pair of bluetits needs to find at least 60+ caterpillars per hour for 12-14 hours per day, for 4 weeks to feed a clutch of 8 chicks.
They work so hard that their colours fade and you can see them get more scruffy as their energy is tested to the extreme.
Without caterpillars, all their hard work can easily mean their chicks starve before they fledge.
So, do one simple thing and leave parts of your garden unpruned and wild. Let the plants fill with butterfly eggs and caterpillars. Don't spray them or despair at their wriggling. See them as tiny battery packs to feed energy to your bluetits and leave them for that bluetit parent to gleefully remove for you.
More bluetits in your garden means no aphids and no caterpillars as the summer flush of growth occurs.

A win for us and certainly a win for the birds 🥰

Some birds you fall in love with... and when they connect with someone else, you connect with that person too.

That is the ultimate honour when you make something, and it feels even more precious when the meeting happens in your own home. I am so happy this little wool wren has gone home with such a lovely lady.

You know, I love what I do but these moments are the real treasure.

We can't all be fast...
No matter how much I speed up this video, making 5 minutes into 8 seconds, needle felting just takes the time it takes.

These puffins might be finished by the second weekend of the East Kent Artist's Open Houses trail, and that has to be okay for both of us.

Are you seeing my posts, out there?
If you appreciate what I make, do help me out by liking, commenting and sharing. I'd be super happy if those who chose to follow were being shown my posts but, like these puffins, I am feeling a bit pushed to the margins by the man :/

Birds will be furious if you don't come!

EKOH starts this weekend, from 11am. So much art to engage with and *coughs gently* to buy. I'm at no.18 with a giant bluetit and caterpillars in the window, and added pink bunting asap!
