Ever wondered how you could increase your on-ice stability and balance while away from the rink? Try out this off-ice sequence and start improving today!

Want to improve your crossovers? Try this 3-step isolation drill. We use isolation drills to create balance and cleanly set muscle movement patterns.

Step 1 - push directly outside your circle (not on an angle like a stride). The nature of the curve and the hip rotation will naturally bring the leg back.

Step 2 - lift your knee up using your hip flexor. Keep your lifting knee at an acute angle with the toe pointed down to the ice.

Step 3 - step down toe first, flex into the cross and push your under push directly outside the circle. The push should snap from your pinky toe.

Maintain your BEND, LEAN, and ROTATION for all three parts.

1. Less is more when it comes to Mohawks

2. Keep your upper body quiet. The shoulders only job is to keep you over the circle NOT to create the open step.

3. Always open from the free hip first, not the skating hip.

4. Keep feet close to the ice at all times. Lifting feet too high limits your quickness.

5. The power comes from pressing down into the ice, not pushing and lifting the feet up.

MOBILITY BEFORE POWER.

You can’t produce power through a range of motion you can’t effectively access or control.

A pistol squat isn’t just a demonstration of strength. It’s a combination of ankle dorsiflexion, hip mobility, stability, balance, and neuromuscular control.

Sound familiar? These are all essential components of efficient skating mechanics.

When athletes lack mobility, they often compensate with inefficient movement patterns, limiting their ability to generate and transfer force effectively.

When doing pistol squats - I always recommend being barefoot (some shoes can help compensate for lack of mobility) and no weight. Learn how to keep the foot completely flat to the ground.

Take your time to learn. Going down, holding, and coming up are three different muscle movements, and you need to master all of them.

If needed, hold on to something as you learn until you can do them unassisted. I’d rather you do them correctly with assistance than incorrectly on your own.

All good edges require three ingredients: BEND, LEAN, and ROTATION.

- For the outside edge BEND through your hip knees and ankle.

- LEAN your ankle into the circle.

- Start with your free hip back and ROTATE it to the front while maintain the upper body over circle.

- When working outside edge rotation, try and quiet the upper body and learn to isolate the rotation of the hips. This holds true for both forward and backward outside edges.

Ankle mobility is a very important and very forgotten piece of skating among hockey players. Try out this ankle mobility exercise and let us know what you think!

Just another example of combining quick punches and skids to develop agility. Here we added a puck to increase the number of processes the brain is working through. As always, we keep skills simple and repetitive to create muscle memory.
