Clay Studio of Philadelphia: Clay As Care @theclaystudiophl

Thank you for including me in this years community exhibition. There were so many phenomenal ceramicists that I am forever inspired!

I have been working and teaching in clay for over 20 years and it has been a medium that has been very sacred and special to me. I rarely sell my sculptures or let people see them but I’m slowly beginning to share them.

Working in this medium can be very laborious and I put so much time in my process. It also takes a lot to have access to have a ceramic practice.

I use traditional West African techniques and it takes a lot of effort so I’m always very attached to my ceramic work via ancestral energy.

As an artist with chronic pain and fatigue working in this type of medium is impacted significantly, so it is a huge accomplishment to me to complete my ceramic expressions.

I’m so glad to be able to share more of my 3Dimensional expressions with the public. Learn more about this exhibition in the link in my bio.

Luster Gallery and Studio: Philly Is For Artists!!!!!

This is one of the best totes I have right now. I got it from the wonderful and phenomenal @chelseylusterart @lustergallerystudio. I rock it everywhere I go because I agree so hard! And I stand on it.

I love tote culture in Philly because I feel like our bags are all doing the talking and your tote can say a lot about you.

I love going tote watching and seeing people walking around with their fun totes. Maybe that’s because I’m a recovering undercover bag lady🤣🫠

I think the message of this bag comes at an important time because our arts funding has been cut drastically and that will make a huge effect to the art and creative communities here in Philly.

The thing is that if we call this city an “artsy city” then why don’t we put our money where our mouth is out loud. Some cities invest 40 million on their arts budget.

I’m not saying other areas don’t need funding; all I am saying is that whatever you are enjoying in this city it’s because of our creative economy.

The truth is that artists could be better supported in this city and the slice of pie could reach a lot more artists.

The exploitation is rampant and the wage theft is often. Artists are met with disrespect and burnout and told this is an “artsy city”.

We are forced to deal with unethical organizations just to feed ourselves and our families and these are the same organizations that say they are in solidarity with artists.

Yet they are squeezing artists behind closed doors. It’s disgusting. I hate hearing story after story of my artist comrades, especially women, get fkd over by some org. Including myself.

If the budget can’t get bigger the compassion for artists, creatives and the creative economy needs to be stronger because we also contribute to wellness, empowerment and engineering of society.

Philly artists are also part of the real reason why this city is trying to heal. It’s through the arts!

RISO Fest Philadelphia: Wavy Lines Press

Thank you so much Riso Expo Philly for including my artwork with your publication. It looks so beautiful as a risograph. I love being among all my fellow zinesters.

This particular issue was about water. One of my themes in my work is about water and I am often inspired by cultural storytelling around mermaids and water myths.

This special brigade of mermaids are tasked with saving captured Africans that are thrown/died/jumped from a slave ship and they secure them from the sharks that are following the slave ship.

Water has always been essential to all of our stories and I’m glad to contribute to this publication with my water art.

Been feeln like…I’m weary of the ways of the world…

Call it what it’s been, call it what you don’t want to say it is… it’s FEMICIDE. ITS A CRISIS! BLACK WOMEN BEEN FIGHTING FOR OUR LIVES!

You don’t want to call your homie a reredrum or that you/or he has redrum tendencies because ur not the target.

Instead you look at him weird and leave him alone and the woman he deals with takes the brunt and u call urself part of the percentage of the “good men” …and ur oh so happy with urself. Ok.

Then what? You “good men” see all this sht on the news about Black women getting redremed and ur like that’s not me and go about ur day. You don’t think you’re on the same spectrum? GTFOOH!

Well us women are watching yall “good men” too because ur only a hair line away from being that “reredrum man” because there is a wide spectrum that leads to femicide.

Your speech, your unresolved anger, your actions, your demeanor, your tantrums can all contribute to it. We take the brunt of that and still try to love and care for you. Wake up and look in the mirror.

YOU MEN ARE KILLING US!!! and a lot of u have been damn near close if you haven’t already. We women are barely escaping with a milliliter of our lives. I have the scars to prove it.

Did you apologize to a Black woman today? If you’re asking for what? That’s the problem. Your silence is also a response.

Instead of knowing all the stats to every sports game on the planet yall better get with ur redruming homies and have a sleepover and have talk to why you all are so emotional and killing all of us Black women.

Start with saying their names:

Crucial Chronix: Tired AF Zine

Thank you so much @crucialcomix for this wonderful and important opportunity. I finally got my copy! I’m so excited to be among such bad ass comic artists.

This was such a cool comic to participate in because it connected with some of my intersections with art and chronic illness. As someone living with intractable pain and crps all the while being an artist it makes you tired AF!

Living and participating in life in spite of being in pain and managing all other symptoms can be really complicated. Sometimes it’s so ridiculous all you can do is laugh about it to keep from crying.

I hope you can check this zine out and catch a giggle or too. In addition to that gain some perspective from those that experience chronic illness and use their art to tell their story.

This is why I love zines and comics so much because it’s such a great way to share a perspective and use creativity to express an experience.

Drawing comics allows me to laugh at things that are actually really dark and sad for me and a way to share information through art and literacy.

100th Anniversary of Black History Week 1926-2026

I’m a really excited to celebrate the 100th anniversary of Black History Week. Carter G. Woodson’s intention of this celebration was to acknowledge the achievements and histories of African American people.

I think we as Black peoples have come very far, yeah slip and slid is very real and it is happening in real time and I can feel it. It feels more like 1626 than 2026.

Black history is made every time I blink. We see it on the tennis court, during movie award season, on the Broadway stage, on the ice in Milan, in Paris with the first African-American artist to be honored with a major solo exhibition at the Grand Palais and with every step and with every breath we take. That will be never be taken away.

However the spectrum swings both ways because this has also been the most weirdest, most disrespectful and down right wtf is going on Black History Month and I really think yall are doing it on purpose.

From the mysterious strange fruiting, the continuous disregard for Black life, the awful post by YOUR president, the taking down of the panels at the original White House, the incident with the professor and their hot mikes on zoom, the disgusting incident at the BAFTAS; I mean the type of fuckgarrity happening is outrageous this month.

Many of us are raised to rise above and to over come hate with love. To turn pain into a source of power. And some are both and just DGAF.

There are noN word pass go cards over here!

You want us to invoke all of our nice cheeked ancestors huh? Every ancestor is has their own place in the revolution. You all are really lucky we don’t go Nat Turner, Denmark Vesy, John Brown, Toussaint or Queen Nanny on yall azzez frfr because it’s right there at the surface.

We’ve definitely had it up to here. This month alone has been exhausting. Don’t make me get up out my seat!
