This week seems to be all about having a break from digital photography and getting my hands dirty. It started on Sunday when I attended a cyanotype workshop run by Jo and @shrewsbury_film_photo_club . Very happy with the blue tomatoes and got to try staining a couple in both green tea & coffee. by @mingdenasty

Thank you @oliverwwilkins for a really lovely afternoon making my first tintype using my Hasselblad 550c with a back that I purchased from @malek.show
Such a lot to think about and I’ve got to really be more confident with the chemicals. The results look a bit messy but I really like that, it shows the process. by @mingdenasty

It’s been wonderful working on this project over the past year with @grain_projects and North Midlands LGBT+ Older Peoples Group. Really looking forward to being able to share the work with you.

ALWAYS HERE
Untold Stories from the LGBT+ Community in North Staffordshire
The New Vic Theatre - 15 September - 12 October
Spode Museum - 19 September - 30 November
Hanley Library - 8 October - 30 November
Stoke Library - 10 October - 16 November.

The exhibitions bring together new photography, archive images and personal stories to celebrate LGBT+ lives shaped by identity, activism, place and social change.  ALWAYS HERE is a socially engaged photography and heritage project that through workshops, meetings, interviews, photoshoots, research and oral histories, has seen participants sharing their experiences and defining life moments. The project celebrates people who have made remarkable contributions to life in North Staffordshire across culture, industry, education, healthcare, social care, housing, retail, engineering, politics and community activism.
The exhibitions include new portraits by Ming de Nasty and Daniel Lyttleton, and archive photographs, documents, texts and objects belonging to the individuals that illustrate their stories.  Following the exhibitions the content will become a new digital LGBT+ Public Archive at the Stoke-on-Trent City Archives based at the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery.
The project was produced by GRAIN Projects in partnership with The North Midlands LGBT+ Older Peoples Group, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund and Arts Council England.  We would also like to thank our exhibition partners Spode Museum, New Vic Theatre and Stoke-on-Trent Libraries, and our legacy partner the Stoke-on-Trent City Archives. by @mingdenasty

Last night was the 1st night I’ve slept in my van with every window wide open and it was still far too hot! Needless to say me and Nanc had very little sleep, ended up watching the sun rise, after watching the solar eclipse and meteor ☄️ shower till midnight with my brother. taken in Shropshire by @mingdenasty

Realised I’ve not posted on here for ages!!
Here’s a few from the garden over the past few months . It’s really taken a battering with all this heat and I’m going to have pitiful crops this year. (Apart from courgettes and cucumbers) Looking back I remember how lush it was just a couple of months ago . taken in Shropshire by @mingdenasty

@mingdenasty is my artist choice for Chapter Seven, Killing Other Girls Like Me. She’s been documenting the lives of queers and activists and others since the 1980s, when she took these photos of me and Penny.

I wrote a book about this time called Other Girls Like Me and the chapter in my new book is about how a TV company wanted to turn this story about female solidarity and activism into murder and mayhem instead. Because male #violenceagainstwomen sells. #feminism #peace #1980s @mingdenasty_archive @greenhamstories #survivingapatriarchyonsteroids by @mingdenasty

So crucial to see the significant work of Ten8 magazine’s legacy powerfully, and poetically, displayed @thenewartgallerywalsall by curator @pelumi.odubanjo. Ten8 afterimage explores the sociopolitical impact Ten8 magazine (1979-92) pioneered, evoking debates around representation of humanity and the canon of picture making.

First image depicts @mingdenasty and @derekbishton. The publication was the brainchild of Derek Bishton, Brian Homer and the late John Reardon and Ming de Nasty was one of the contributors.

Secondly, Merrise Crooks-Bishton is pictured holding Survival literacy magazine which was her innovation edited and published solely by herself in 1984 and all written by women working in Handsworth, Birmingham.

Thirdly, Maxine Walker, another contributing artist alongside her work.
