Old email attachments can become identity theft. It's Day 16 of 365 Days of Cyber Sec(urity)
Here’s something most people never think about: Your old email attachments can be a goldmine for identity theft.
Think about what’s sitting in your inbox:
• scans of your driver’s licence
• passport photos
• Medicare or ID documents
• rental applications
• bank forms
• signed contracts
Even if you forgot they’re there attackers haven’t.
If someone gains access to your email, they don’t need to steal your identity from scratch.
They just download it.
Those documents can be used to:
• open accounts
• reset services
• pass identity checks
• impersonate you with institutions
Action today:
• search your email for words like “licence”, “passport”, “ID”, “verification”
• download copies you still need
• delete the emails and attachments
• empty the trash folder
Your inbox isn’t a filing cabinet.
It’s a target.
Cleaning it up is boring and incredibly effective.
See you tomorrow… for more cyber sec(urity) by @mingjohanson

My home office is probably a fire hazard, but truthfully there's a rebellion to trauma that lives there.

As a kid there was something so calming about staring at the candle wick wobbling about. I would imagine that I had psychic powers that could move the flame with my mind.

I have fond memories of that kid. Even in destruction. She knew how to create. She still does. ❤️ Now... is the #firestarter hashtag going to get me to the Prodigy fans or pyromaniacs? - @mingjohanson by @mingjohanson

For the next two years, leading into the 2028 Australian Federal Election, I'm starting a new series called "Behind the Algorithm".

It's not a political commentary show.
It's not a fact-checking channel.
And it's certainly not an attempt to tell you who to vote for.

It's an investigation into how technology is changing political communication in Australia.

I've spent more than 20 years working in digital marketing and technology. I understand how online advertising platforms work, how algorithms optimise campaigns, and how digital persuasion has evolved. I think those skills can be put to good use helping Australians better understand the systems shaping what appears in our feeds.

Because if two neighbours can open Facebook and be shown completely different political messages, we should all understand how and why that happens.

To protect the independence of this work, I'm adopting the following editorial standards.

Behind the Algorithm | Editorial Standards

Every major political party and significant independent campaign will be analysed using the same framework.

I will focus on advertising techniques, technology and communication strategy - not telling people how to vote.

I will distinguish between observable facts, marketing analysis and personal opinion.

Wherever possible, my analysis will be based on publicly available information and transparency tools, such as Meta's Ad Library and Google's Ads Transparency Center.

If I make a factual error, I'll correct it publicly.

And perhaps most importantly: until the conclusion of the 2028 Australian Federal Election, I will not accept contracts to create or manage paid digital advertising campaigns for political parties or political candidates.

That's a deliberate decision.

As someone who works in digital marketing, I could choose to be part of political campaigns.

Instead, I've chosen to document them.

My hope is that this series encourages more curiosity and a little less outrage.

Whether you vote Labor, Liberal, Greens, Nationals, One Nation, an independent, another minor party, or you haven't decided yet, my goal is the same:

To help you understand the technology behind the message. by @mingjohanson

I've spent the day with a migraine, struggling with being unproductive and feel the pressure behind my eyeballs, feeling like I "should" (omph gross there's that pressure language) be doing more.

I had a thought pop into my brain and I started tugging at the the thought thread.

"Who benefits when you fear your own greatness?"

The evidence is there, in little scattered puzzle pieces along a lifetime of experiences (yes, some of it being trauma).

If our brains can keep us safe by playing strategies of self-sabotage, then logically, they can keep us safe by playing success strategies. by @mingjohanson

I spent ten minutes today disconnecting and being present in nature. Honestly, my anxiety definitely has been trying to take the steering wheel and drive.

There is this... let's call it... "fun" side of cptsd.

Ironically it's not when I'm financially broke with my back against a wall.

Almost always it's when I'm abundant, money is flowing, and the business is growing. Every growth stage has had some sort of version of this anxiety pop out and say hello, and then immediate try to self sabotage.

Trauma connected to childhood around feeling unsafe with money is such a tough nut to crack, in the past it looked like unhealthy spending (that way nobody else can take it off me).

Now. I honour the child. Take a deep breathe. Acknowledge some of the strategies she used to play out to stay safe, remind myself that this no longer serves me and refocus on the next immediate steps.

If you see this post today, this is your reminder that you don't have to stick to old strategies, take five minutes to timeout and sit in nature if you can #businesscoach by @mingjohanson

People often mistake me for a High D in the DiSC profile.

Direct. Loud. Confident. Driven.

The pink hair. The branding. The stage presence. The carefully curated aesthetic built over decades.

But underneath all of that?

I’m actually a very high C.

A whole room of conference attendees found that out recently and looked genuinely shocked.

Because the version of me they saw first was the armour.

And honestly?

That armour was deliberate.
I spent a large part of my life learning that staying small felt safer.

Childhood trauma taught invisibility.
Later experiences taught hyper-vigilance.
Boundaries crossed. Trust broken. Survival became performance.

So I built a mask.

Not a fake self.

An amplified self.

A version of me strong enough to walk into rooms the younger version of me would have been terrified to enter.

And while that outer layer may look very “High D”… the people who know me deeply know exactly where the High C lives.

In the obsessive research.

The pattern recognition.

The need for precision.

The way I can disappear into strategy, systems, psychology, branding, behaviour, technology, and human complexity for hours.

The truth is: sometimes what looks like confidence is actually architecture.
A structure someone built carefully to survive long enough to finally become visible.

And maybe that’s why I care so much about helping other people uncover who they actually are underneath the branding, the coping mechanisms, the masks, and the “professional versions” of themselves.
Because sometimes the strongest people in the room are actually the ones who spent years teaching themselves how to stop disappearing.
