Iris is an object designer-maker and repairer who works primarily with metal, clay, and natural stone.

For her, making is a way of thinking—a process that connects mind, body, and material.
Through slow, intentional processes, Iris aimed to transform raw, elemental materials into objects that carry both personal meaning and cultural memory, hoping to inspire an empathetic sense towards the objects, to help increase the bonds and longevity.

2026 ~ISH! Group exhibition 𝓥𝓸𝔂𝓪𝓰𝓮𝓼 Artist Spotlight

Xiao Yu (Iris) is a designer-maker who graduated from UNSW’s Bachelor of Design program in 2022 with a major in Objects and Textiles. Practicing on Gadigal Land, they create wearable objects and sculptural works through mixed-media processes using metal, clay, and textiles.

Rooted in a Chinese cultural background, their practice carries traces of tradition, symbolism, and the discipline of craft. Inspired by nature and lived experience, their work often reflects thoughts and emotions at different stages of life, exploring how individual identities respond to cultural and social change, the intimacy between people, and, on a greater scale, the relationship between humans and nature.

𝓥𝓸𝔂𝓪𝓰𝓮 brings together the works of 20 artists from multiple disciplines who studied or graduated from UNSW as international students, inviting the audience to reflect on the diverse realities of navigating life between cultures, languages, and identities.

⛵️Opening night celebration: Tuesday 2th June, 6-8pm

From Material Matters, last year’s Brooch Club exhibition ✨

Xiao Yu (Iris) is an object designer–maker working on the traditional lands of the Gadigal people of the Eora Nation. A graduate of the Bachelor of Design at UNSW Art, Design & Architecture, she works across metal, clay, and textile, creating objects that bridge material, emotion, and memory. Focusing on wearable forms, Iris’s practice is inspired by lived experience, with aesthetics rooted in her Chinese heritage. Her work engages in a quiet dialogue between hand and material, exploring how meaning unfolds over time, through touch, and with careful making.

This piece of brass with a flower-shaped cutout was found in a box of materials kindly donated by Margaret West, along with the bench I worked at during my graduate residency at SquarePeg Studios. I turned part of it into my first piece at this bench, a little gourd charm now hanging from my ear. Later, when I encountered a book of Margaret’s work, it struck me that this flower could have been hers. Inspired by the brass plate on the bench, I shaped this brooch as a simple rectangle. With each soldered layer, it grows heavier with material, memory, and the generosity of precedents, carrying forward the hopes and expectations held when wearing. Whether or not it was hers no longer matters; it has now become a vessel of connection, carrying the traces of those who have touched, shaped, and shared it across time, reminding us that — material matters.

This extra-proud little set was commissioned by @yinuo.yu and @zavomellon last year, and I made three variations for them to choose from…in the end, we kept them all! 🤣

It felt like more than just a project; it was a celebration of making, friendship, and shared moments. 💫

I first met @tulipfin and @kami_plantmami on a Project Market Space day back in 2023, and from the very beginning, they felt like such wonderful souls. 💐🦀✨

Last year, Vi-an asked me to make this little gourd pendant as a secret birthday gift for Cami. I was so flattered to be trusted with such a special gift and felt very lucky to be part of something so intimate between two sisters. 💝

For me, it’s these pieces of connections that make creating more meaningful, never just a job, but being invited into stories and memories that mean something more. 🤲

Hi friends! It’s been so long :))
And good news - I‘m getting back online!✨ Continuing to make, and also with updates since the last market, last year.

It was a great time and I’m very grateful for everyone I met, who encouraged, supported and keeps supporting me.

From today, I will start to share feedback I received from the lovely commission inquiries following the time order, as a recap, also an opportunity to express my appreciation. 🫶

This piece is my first very meaningful commission from @ldvry_ ! I‘m so glad to see that my work has been taken care of, and having a great interaction with the wearer. I hope the little vase will bring you more joy with carrying plants around, and be a good accompany at all times! 🌱🌿🪴

From the Crown Shyness Phenomenon: Conversations, Relationships & Boundaries - Nature vs. Human, Ancient vs. Modern Worlds.

”The Nature Perspective“: Patterns inspired by the tree branches represent the nature part of thinking, as trees can sense and communicate through signals from their leaves and roots.
Materials & Techniques: Traditional metalsmith process, various thickness of copper wires wraps and hammered, finally bound with rivets (100% handcraft).
