In honor of pride month, I want to make a post about one of the most impactful films I have ever seen. It is called Sanctuary, and it is a documentary that exposes the plight of LBGTQIA+ individuals in faith communities, particularly the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. As a lifelong member of this faith tradition, I have heard firsthand the harmful doctrines that have been taught by leaders and members of this church, and I have mourned with my friends in the LGBTQIA+ community as the Church has continued to implement policies and practices that ostracize our queer brothers and sisters. I have watched Sanctuary twice in the last year, and it has helped me realize that I need to do more to support queer individuals through my voice, my actions, and my vote. I encourage my family and friends to join with me in considering ways that we can extend a loving, nonjudgmental hand to our LGBTQIA+ brothers and sisters, particularly in our church congregations. We cannot stand idly by as they are mistreated and discriminated against by our religious organizations, our government, and individuals in our lives. They are children of our Heavenly Parents, and they need our love now more than ever. I love this quote by Christian pastor Stan Mitchell: “If you claim to be someone’s ally, but aren’t getting hit by the stones thrown at them, you aren’t standing close enough.” I love the queer individuals in my life. Happy pride 🏳️‍🌈❤️
